    BABY WAS SUFFOCATED

Shortly after dinner on Sunday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs, Oscar Hallman, who reside on Edna St., Kitchener, placed their six month old daughter Irene in its crib for its afternoon rest and went to the Grand River, where they spent the afternoon fishing. During their absence neighbors on a visit to the home, found the infant dying in its bed, caused apparently from suffocation, the bed clothing being over the child's head. Shortly before eight o'clock, the parents arrived home and were shocked to find their infant daughter dead. Mr. and Mrs. Hallman occupy a small temporary home on Edna St., while a new home is being erected nearby. During their absence in the afternoon, Jonathan Hallman who owns the house, made a visit to the home, about three o'clock. Finding the door closed he unlocked it and entered to get some clothing belonging to himself. He noticed the baby in its bed which was apparently alright. An hour later Mr. and Mrs. Brighton, who reside on Shanley St., called at the Hallman home. On entering Mrs. Brighton's attention was at once drawn by faint cries coming from the baby's bed, where she found the baby's head was covered with clothing. Taking the child in her arms she immediately saw that the baby was suffering from suffocation and before the arrival of Dr. Kalbfleisch, who was summoned, the baby died. Friends endeavored to get in touch with the parents, but were unsuccessful. Shortly before eight o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. Hallman arrived and explained that, owing to the fact that neither had a watch with them, they were unaware it was late, until they heard the church bells ringing.
