    Notes:

"Zelma Baer left footprints of discipline and hope wherever she went. She learned or inherited her authority and discipline from her father and her mothering and housekeeping abilities from her mother. 'She thought clearly and acted wisely, although we did not always recognize it at the time', commented her sister. Her life was one of practical ministry and selfless caring.

    THE PRACTICAL NURSE

Zelma was born on June 6, 1905 to Ephraim and Lovina (Nahrgang) Baer on their farm just west of the hamlet of Haysville. Zelma's childhood predated modern conveniences, the world wars, and the Depression. Zelma learned to work, but she also had the physique. She was a well-built,strong woman, and according to a neighbour and friend, always 'carried herself regally'.

As the oldest in a large family, Zelma learned 'practical nursing' at an early age. Her brothers and sisters were born at home. In a large familycommunicable diseases made their rounds. The family was quarantined most of one winter because several children contracted scarlet fever one after another.

The Baer family was deeply religious. There was daily family worship, and they always went to church - and that was on time. On one occasion Father packed his family into the sleigh with heated bricks and blankets, and when they arrived at church, found the service had been cancelled due to impassable roads! It was the Biehn Mennonite Church (now Nith Valley) where the Baers attended.

The Baers entertained missionaries and Bible teachers in the home, giving the children exposure to people and the world beyond their home and community. It is from these experiences that Zelma may have aspired tobecome a doctor. At age 25, she left for Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonsburg, Virginia. Her schooling in Virginia was limited to a year or two, and the goal to become a doctor was abandoned.

Zelma came back to Ontario and embarked on a career of providing nursing care in the home. During the early years she served primarily on confinement cases. At that time most babies were born at home. Doctors were plentiful enough that practicing midwives had been put out of business - especially in Zelma's community - but people still engaged the services of a practical nurse. Called at the onset of labour, Zelma would aid in the decision as to when to call the doctor. If, for any reason, the doctor did not arrive on time, Zelma was there to take care of the delivery. Several family members and friends attest to the fact that Zelma delivered their babies.

Those who engaged Zelma as their 'nurse' got a housekeeper, additional parent, and manager in the bargain. If the baby was a firstborn, she shared the couple's excitement. If a young child was being replaced by a new baby, Zelma took this child to bed with her, giving both physical and emotional comfort.

If necessary, Zelma managed the household. A member of the Garber family commented on Zelma's roll in their home: 'When it was time for chores, she expected the cows to be in from the field so she could help with the milking. If the cows weren't in on time, there might be a familyconference at supper, and one of us children would have to squirm. At times like this, Zelma knew enough to be quiet and let the real parents supply the discipline. But if the parents were not there, Zelma was well able to practice fair and firm control....'

Whent he doctors finally convinced their clients to go to the hospital to have their babies, Zelma turned to the care of the elderly.

When working with young families, Zelma frequently ran into uncooperative youngsters, but she was able to avoid a great deal of fuss with her authoritative manner and quick movements. The elderly were also responsive to her firm, although kind, directions. All ages loved her forher good-natured humour and her spontaneous laughter.

Zelma did not do as much Sunday school and Bible school teaching as manysingle women did, because she could not as easily schedule her work to include such assignments. Sewing circle was more or less in the same category. While she had her permanent residence at Baden with several unmarried sisters, Zelma did serve as president of one of the sewing circle groups and Martha as secretary. They gathered used clothing for relief in their garage. This frequently needed washing, and when the clothes line was full of men's pants, these women had some explaining to do! Zelma was an excellent seamstress. She made her own clothes, and also sewed for the families she worked for when the need required. She could have made a more substantial contribution to the sewing circle if time had permitted.

Although Zelma was devoted to the Mennonite Church, she happily attended whatever church was nearby - no matter what denomination. One woman for whom Zelma worked gives the following tribute: 'I will always remember the unselfish devotion she gave to every task, however small, or humble. She was the perfect example of a Christian woman, and I learned a lot from her.'

After a short illness, Zelma died on Nov. 6, 1978 at the Maples Nursing Home in Tavistock, and is buried in the Nith Valley Mennonite Cemetery. She lives on in the memories of the many persons touched by her ministryof love and caring."

    Notes:

Baer - Edith was born near Breslau, Ont., April 2, 1912, and went home to be with her Lord from her father's residence, Kitchener, Ont., on June 7, 1943; aged 31 y. 2 m. 5 d. She leaves to mourn her departure her father and mother (Mr. and Mrs. Simon Baer), 3 brothers (Arthur, Ipperwash; Menasseh, Orillia; and Raymond, Kitchener), 4 sisters (Mrs. Omar Rudy, West Montrose; Mrs. Vernice Schmitt, London; Mrs. Ronald Snider, Waterloo; and Mrs. Mervin Weber, Kitchener), and a large number of relatives and friends. On July 12, 1925 she was baptized and received into the Mennonite church at Breslau. She was a faithful Christian, loyal to her Lord and her church. Among her greatest earthly pleasures was attendance at the regular services in the house of the Lord. She was afflicted with an incurable malady for 21 years, but accepted her lot in a true Christian way. She frequently expressed her desire that her departure might come quickly, and this wish the Lord graciously granted. Physician despaired of her life a number of times, but a kind heavenly Father allowed her the extra years to witness for Him. She will be greatly missed because of her cheerful disposition, her patient acceptance of painful disappointments, and her fine spirit of Christian courage which grew as her life on earth was prolonged. We may all see more clearly for having seen such a shining spiritual light. Funeral services were conducted on June 9 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mervin Weber and at the First Mennonite Church. Interment in adjoining cemetery. The ministers were S.F. Coffman, Merle Shantz, and Oscar Burkholder. Text, I Peter 5: 10.

    Notes:

BAER, Morgan Nyle Morgan passed away peacefully at Nithview Community in New Hamburg on June 16, 2014 at the age of 93.

He was born on March 17, 1921 near Bright, Ontario.

His father passed away when he was 14 years old, making it hard for his mother to support her young family of six children. As a result, Morgan as a teenager left school after grade 8 and worked for neighbouring farmers, bringing all his wages home until he reached the age of 21.

After he and Mae were married in 1949, they purchased a farm near Guelph which is currently covered over by the water of the Guelph Lake Conservation Area.

While farming part-time, Morgan earned his income during those years by working at a foundry. In 1959, he and Mae purchased the farm on Carmel-Koch Road near Baden, which he farmed until his "retirement" in 1986. After that, he and Mae spent 3 years doing volunteer work for MCC in Alberta and Pennsylvania. Subsequently, they lived in Wellesley until 2008, when they moved to a garden home in the Nithview retirement community.

Since August, 2013, Morgan has been in long-term care. Morgan and Mae worshipped faithfully at Shantz Mennonite Church since 1959. Morgan will be remembered as a strong, hard worker who was always willing to share what he had with others. He had a beautiful tenor voice and he loved four-part harmony. In his younger years he played the piano, guitar and piano accordion.

Even until very recently he would enjoy spending hours singing hymns and accompanying himself on the organ. He also enjoyed working in the woodlot, and operated a chain saw until only a few years ago. After he gave up driving his car, he purchased an electric bicycle which he used almost every day until the age of 92. He used to take great pleasure in writing humourous birthday cards for many of the children at church. Even until his very last days, his smile, his sense of humour and his gentle good nature were appreciated by everyone who came in contact with him.

Morgan was predeceased by his parents Ezra Baer and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Good), his four younger brothers: Elmer, Curtis, Orval and Wayne; his brother-in-law Roy Meadows and his sister-in-law, Jean Shantz.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Mae (Shantz) and his sister Erma Meadows, sisters-in-law, Pauline and Rose Baer, and the Shantz family, Alice Gascho (Norman), Lowell (Lorene), Norma and Helen McDonald (Arnold) as well as many nieces and nephews.

His children are Dwight, Stewart, Dennis and Dale; and his foster sons are Mike and Ron Roulleau. Dwight's family includes his wife Jennifer Ostic-Baer, his children Janna, Luke and Amelia, and their mother Erna Millar.

Stewart's family includes his partner Peggy Cosman, his sons Kyle and Ryan, and their mother Dawn Bellmore. Dennis's family includes his children Melissa, Laura, Daniel and Katie, and their mother Mary Lou Shantz. Dale's family includes his wife Sue (Scott), and their children Matt and Sarah. Visitation will be at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home , 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg, on Thursday, June 19, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral will be held on Friday June 20, 2014 at Shantz Mennonite Church, 2473 Erb's Road, Baden, Ontario at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations to MCC Canada would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

A special thanks to the staff of both the Westmount and Nithview long-term care homes for their excellent and very loving care. Online condolence and memorial tribute information at www.markjutzifuneralhomes.ca

Innovative educator supported students and teachers

By Valerie Hill Special to the Record

From a sickly Mennonite farm boy to an innovative educator determined to change how children learned, John Baer defied expectations.

John was born on a New Dundee farm on Jan. 14, 1943, one of seven children of Moses and Salema Baer. Moses, a farmer and church bishop, held to the Mennonite tradition of not allowing children to continue past Grade 8 but he also recognized John as an ever-curious child who had no desire to become a farmer. John's undiagnosed illness never stopped him from doing his farm chores, a work ethic he carried throughout his life.

"He wanted to be in school, he was always interested in things," said his wife, Debbie Baer.

John entered elementary school a year early because his older brother David needed the moral support of a sibling when he started school. The teacher, seeing John had a robust mind, suggested he would be accepted as a student, not just his brother's companion.

After high school, John completed the one-year program at Stratford Teachers' College, graduating when he was still a teenager.

Debbie said John actually wanted to be a veterinarian but teachers' college was more affordable. After one year of training, it's hard to imagine he was prepared for his first assignment: a one-room schoolhouse near Durham. He wasn't yet 20.

"In those days you were the teacher, you were the principal and you were the custodian," said Debbie.

John's next school was in Winterbourne where he taught and served as vice-principal and later moved to St Jacobs Public School as principal. John's entire career was as a principal, though he also taught, mostly history.

John, who had two sons, John Jr. and Daniel, from his first marriage, upgraded his education while working full time, first an undergraduate degree from Wilfrid Laurier University followed by a graduate degree from the University of Windsor.

John's career with the Waterloo Region District School Board spanned three decades, including opening two new schools: Glencairn and Country Hills. He met Debbie in 1972 when she came to teach at St. Jacobs.

Debbie knew she had married her perfect partner and remembers when her class was invited to join Phyllis Ribey's kindergarten class for story and song time. She saw firsthand John's influence on how the children were being educated and how he supported his staff.

"I was seeing in action the kind of teacher this Mr. Baer held in high esteem: a caring, engaging and uplifting teacher who knew how young children blossomed."

John also recognized in Debbie an ability that needed to be nurtured.

"He would call on all the experts to help me grow and learn just as the children did," she said. Their relationship "was created by our shared beliefs and our knowledge that all children could grow and learn in an environment that nurtured each of them as individuals."

On a personal level, Debbie was struck by John's humbleness, his caring about everyone around him.

"I thought 'how can this man be so nice?' but he was," said Debbie of the man she describes as "a gentle soul."

Their daughter Jenni-Rebecca Baer, also an educator (the family was affectionately known in school as "the three Baers") said her father had a child-centric view on education. He saw each child as an individual, one that would grow, learn and thrive in their own unique way. There was no one-size-fits-all in John's mind. He wanted every child to feel welcome and excited about learning.

While studying for his graduate degree, John's thesis would form the foundation of his career as an educator.

Some of the ideas in "The Learning Place: an Alternative Educational Environment for Elementary Schools" were implemented when he was at Glencairn Public School.

Inge Ford had been John's vice-principal at Glencairn.

"John was very engaging with students, staff, parents and the community," she recalled. "He was always forward-thinking and innovative, always ensuring students came first. He was also a big Elvis fan"

Jenni-Rebecca talked about the Elvis birthday parties her father would hold at the school, getting the kids involved, everyone singing Elvis songs.

After John retired in 1997, the couple purchased an empty 64-acre property near Paisley where they built a house, barns and planted gardens. John would continue to help at the schools when needed and Debbie continued teaching another 10 years before she too retired.

For years, John dealt with a manageable form of leukemia but when the effects of Parkinson's impacted his life, they sold their property and moved to Point Clark. Debbie cared for him at home. John died on May 26, 2021.

"My dad was my hero," said Jenni-Rebecca.

    David Rudy
    1932 - 2020

With grief and with love, we announce the death of David Rudy on October 19, 2020 at St. Mary's General Hospital at age 88. Husband of Norma (Erb) for 65 years, father of Duane Rudy, Lynne Martin, and Gayle Lounsbury (Andrew Lounsbury); grandfather of Jessica Lounsbury and Erin (Lounsbury) Babury, Laura Martin, Ryan Martin and Sarah Martin, Amelia Leon-Rudy and Nathaniel Leon-Rudy; and brother-in-law to Gwen Rudy and Dorothy Erb.

Predeceased by parents, Omar and Verna (Baer) Rudy, brother Robert Rudy, and sister Joan Scheerer, and brothers-in-law Delmar Erb and Clare Scheerer.

Born May 9, 1932, near Winterbourne Ontario, David loved life on the family farm: milking cows, ploughing fields (with one sighted and one blind horse) and helping his family at their kiosk at Kitchener Market. In his youth he worked as a farm labourer in Carstairs, Alberta and then studied at Hesston College, where he worked as a telephone switchboard operator to pay his tuition. On his return he built concrete farm silos and, to his delight, the foundation for Chesley Lake Camp's dining hall. He worked for Reist Radio while studying electronics at DeVry and working at Gruen Funeral Home. He moved to Hallman Organs and travelled much of Canada installing and repairing organs for grateful church congregations.

When approached in 1960 to become Director of Fairview Mennonite home, he and Norma felt God's calling. For 27 years, he was the motivating force in planning and implementing Fairview's transformation into one of Canada's first continuum of care facilities. He oversaw the building of independent living apartments, a seniors centre, and the conversion of Preston School Apartments into seniors' residences. David knew even little things affect quality of care and insisted residents receive the best ice cream and softest toilet paper available. Along with Norma and others in the Ontario Association of Non-profit Housing and Services (now known as AdvantAge Ontario) David helped transform elder care so it met the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of our parents and grandparents. David served as OANHSS President but was never one to draw attention to himself, saying "The leader is the servant to the needs of the people." Others recognized his contributions and David received the Association's 75th anniversary tribute award. He closed his working career as Administrator at St. Joseph's Home in Guelph. In his retirement he enjoyed travelling Ontario's countryside distributing Choice Books.

David met Norma at Chesley Lake Mennonite Youth Camp in 1949 and they were married in 1955. Members of First Mennonite Church, they were asked to help seed Rockway Mennonite Church and became charter members there. While living and working at Fairview, David felt the need for a family "escape" and purchased an empty lot at Chesley Lake Camp. David built much of the family cottage himself, providing both shelter and an anchor for generations of memories. He enjoyed leading hymns at Chesley Lake Chapel, especially when Carolyn Roth accompanied on the organ. He served on the Chesley Lake Camp Board of Directors for many years, golfed for the fun of it and most importantly enjoyed fellowship over a cup of coffee and a slice of pie. He was happiest when building project, tent trailering with his family across North America or doing anything related to water skiing. He loved organ music, choral music, singing with the Menno singers, ice cream, and spending time with his 7 grandchildren. When asked how he was, he liked to say "As you see me" which was pretty much how and who he was. We'll miss him greatly.

Funeral will be live streamed at www.erggood.com Oct 26 at 1PM. Condolences and donations may be made to St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation, or Rockway Mennonite Church, through the funeral home erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
