Jesse Carrick - SAD ACCIDENT - A very melancholy accident happened in North Dumfries on Saturday morning last, whereby a young child of Mr. Robert Carrick, of North Dumfries, about three years of age, received such injuries that its life is despaired of. The mother, it appears, had just taken a pot of boiling water off the stove and had set it on the floor, when the little thing lifter the steamer off the top of the pot, and in turning sharp round struck the stove with the steamer, throwing her off her balance, and causing her to fall in a sitting position into the water. The poor little thing was terribly scalded, convulsions setting in directly; and from present appearances the doctor in attendance has but small hopes of her recovery. -Since the above was written we regret to learn that the hopes at one time entertained of the little sufferer's recovery, have not been realized, and that she passed to her rest on Wednesday evening last. The funeral will take place to-day, (Friday), at 1 o'clock. The parents will have the sympathy of the entire community in their saddening bereavement.

    W. C. Barrie Passes In 99th Year

One of the area's most respected citizens, William Carrick Barrie of RR 4, Galt, passed away in Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Friday, October 29th. He was in his 99th year. A son of the late George Barrie and Mary Carrick, he was born and lived all his life on the family century farm, Hwy. 97, west of Galt. His contributions to agriculture, the community and his church were many. During his active farming days he retired in 1973 Barrie grew registered seed and raised hogs, sheep and beef for market. He exhibited seed grain with his father, George, at the first Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1922. He served as a director of the Ontario Plowmen's Association for 51 years and was president in 1918-19. He had missed only one International Plowing Match since it was established in 1911. That was 1955 because he went to the world plowing match in Sweden as coach of the Canadian plowing team. Barrie still had the silver medal he received after winning the Ontario plowing match in 1911 and again in 1912. For six year's, Barrie was secretary of the North Dumfries Plowmen's Association. The 1939 match was held on his farm with 64 plowmen competing. He also served as judge at various Ontario matches and at fall fairs for many years. He retired from the Ontario association's board of directors in 1963 and received a miniature bronze plow mounted on a wooden base commemorating 50 years of service. Barrie was a past president of the Waterloo County Crop Improvement Association, the Waterloo County Federation of Agriculture, the Ontario Agriculture Experimental Union, the South Waterloo Agricultural Society, the Central Dumfries Farmers Club and the South Waterloo Liberal Association. His contributions to local history were also substantial. For instance, he was a founding director of the Doon Pioneer Village in 1953 and subsequently established the village's agricultural display from his own extensive collection. He was also a past presi dent of the Waterloo Historical Society. In the spring of 1975, Barrie was elected to the Agriculture Hall of Fame and in 1974, he received an Ontario Agriculture College centennial medal in recognition of his services to agriculture.

For his contributions to the Waterloo Region, he was elected a member of the Waterloo County Hall of Fame at the Pioneer Village. In the municipal field, Barrie served on North Dumfries Township council from 1921 to 1924 and on the Galt Suburban Roads Commission. He was also livestock evaluator for 25 years in North Dumfries Township. When he retired from farming at 89, Barrie made a hobby of carving wooden gavels. He had made 4,782, many of which were presented to leading figures world-wide. Reforestation was another interest and Barrie was a member of the Waterloo county tree conservation committee for more than 28 years. For his contribution to forest management and property improvement, he received the first forestry award of merit from Ontario in 1973. Barrie was a long-time member and hard worker in Central Presbyterian Church, Cambridge. His grandfather, Robert, helped to build the church in 1880 and family members have been active workers since that time. He was a senior elder at the church for many years. His personal collection of artifacts was almost large enough to start a museum. It included old coins, many found on his property while plowing, Indian axes and arrowheads, old magazines and newspapers. In 1980, Barrie was chosen as the first recipient of the Jack Young Civic Tribute, an award presented annually to the person in the region who best exemplifies the high standards of political and civic life exhibited by Jack Young, the first chairman of Waterloo Region. His wife, the former Agnes King, died in 1981. Surviving are four sons, William of Almonte. Ont.; James and David, both of North Dumfries Township, and George with CUSO in New Guinea: two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Marion) Aitkin, Cambridge, and Mrs. George (Eleanor) Henderson, Guelph, and two brothers, Walter, Kitchener, and Ernest, Waterloo. He was predeceased by one daughter, Mrs. Wesley (Margareti Down in 1970, two sisters and two brothers. The funeral and committal services were conducted Monday at Central Presbyterian Church, Galt. WILL C. BARRIE

In November 1960, W. C. Barrie completed his second year as president after many years of service with the Waterloo Historical Society. Probably no president up to this time had represented the organization at so many events. In Waterloo County during his term as president there were six unveilings of plaques erected by the Ontario Archaeological and Historic Sites Board. At these and many other functions. Will Barrie presided with quiet dignity and always with evidence that he had seriously considered the significance of the occasion.

William Carrick Barrie was born in 1884 at Mount Pleasant Farm, Concession 10, Lot 21, in the Township of North Dumfries. He received his education at Dickie Settlement School - SS. 25 North Dumfries and at the Ontario Agricultural College where, he participated in numerous short courses.

In 1916 Will Barrie married Agnes King of North Dumfries and together they developed an ideal farm home for three girls and four boys. There were twenty-three grandchildren in 1960. Through the years a great many people have been entertained' in this one hundred and five year old house. Here there are many evidences of keen interest in hobbies and pioneer history.

As a director of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association, Mr. Barrie had the opportunity to visit all the Canadian Provinces. His many years of service as a Plowman enabled him while on tours of duty to visit many European countries. Veteran shared stories of regiment he loved
Highland Fusiliers had one last chance to laud highest-ranking officer, decorated soldier
By Greg Mercer, Record staff - Kitchener

He took bullets and shrapnel, crawled on his belly through France and preserved the memories of the men who never made it back home. And when it was time to go, Doug Barrie spent his final night just the way he would have wanted, telling stories of his beloved Highland Light Infantry, surrounded by family and fellow infantrymen and the soldiers he led into battle decades ago. Decorated war veteran Barrie, 87, died only hours after giving his presentation to the local regiment's modern incarnation, the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada, during a Feast of St. Andrew celebration. The crowd at the Cambridge armoury saluted him with a standing ovation, and they shared drinks and laughs. On the drive home, he died of a heart attack. "If you had to write a movie script, he wouldn't have done it any differently," said his son Brian Barrie, an Owen Sound lawyer. "It was as if Dad had saved all his energy for this, and when it was done, it was time to go."

The Waterloo Regional Record - Nov 2009

His men always looked up to him. - At his death, Barrie was the highest ranking officer of the former Highland Light Infantry. He was the regiment's former commanding officer, and later its honorary lieutenant-colonel, like his father Ernest before him. The military was in his blood. When Barrie charged ashore on D-Day as a 21-year-old lieutenant so many years ago, he was doing what he seemed destined to do when he signed up as a cadet at the age of 16. "He had a love affair with the military," said Owen Lackenbauer, the regiment's current honorary lieutenant-colonel. "His father was his hero, and he wanted to follow in his footsteps." Though after the war Barrie took up the family glove business and later became an officer with Waterloo Trust, the Galt regiment remained his passion. In his later years, Barrie became its historian, compiling memorabilia, personal stories, government archives and his own books. One of those books, Buron Remembered, tells the story of the regiment's bloodiest battle, in Buron, France. Of the 600 men who fought to capture the French town, more than 70 were killed and another 200 wounded. That included Barrie himself who for years after the war suffered headaches until it was discovered a piece of shrapnel was still lodged in his head. He brought home others scars, too, a bullet to the thigh and a wound from a sniper's shot to the hand. Barrie's death is the latest in the dwindling group of local men who first crossed the Atlantic with him and the infantry regiment to fight the Germans. With his death, there are only 14 left. "We've never stopped looking up to him since we've been off the battlefield," said Nelson Hilborn of Cambridge, who was 20 years old when he drove onto a beach in Normandy on D-Day "He was our officer and we followed him. He was a tremendous man. When former members of the HLI were honoured at a recent Kitchener Rangers game, Barrie insisted on walking out onto the ice under his own power. When the regiment's colonel-in-chief Prince Andrew paid a visit a few years ago, he was front and centre, cracking jokes. He's survived by his Welsh born wife of 64 years, Talma, whom he met in England while training for the invasion. They had three sons, Brian, Michael and Kevin, and many more grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation and a funeral are planned for Wednesday at Henry Walser Funeral Home. "He helped safeguard our history" Lackenbauer said. "He'll never be forgotten."

The Waterloo Regional Record - Nov 2009

Douglas Barrie 1922 - 2009 - Lt Col. Doug Barrie passed away on Sunday November 29, 2009 only hours after receiving a standing ovation for a presentation he made, at the Feast of St. Andrew, to the Regiment he loved (Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada and, formerly, Highland Light Infantry of Canada). Lt. Col. Barrie was a former commanding officer of the HLI of C and Honorary Lt. Col. of the HF of C, like his father before him. Talma, his wife of 64 years, misses Doug dearly. They were inseparable, having met and fallen in love in Britain as he and his brothers-in-arms were training for the D-Day invasion - an event that tied him to his comrades by blood. He will also be missed by his many other family members and friends, including his sister Marjorie Cruickshank. This is not a time for sadness. Doug's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren celebrated with him in laughter and love in the days preceding his death. Doug could not have scripted a more fitting goodbye for his sons Brian (and wife Helen), Michael (and wife Terry), and Kevin and their families, including six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to join in the celebration of his life at the Henry Walser Funeral Home (507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467) on Wednesday December 2, 2009 with the visitation from 11: 00 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m. and a service in the funeral home chapel at 1: 00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the War Amps CHAMP Program, cards available at the funeral home.

During the feast he presented wartime memorabilia to the regiment (now known as The Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada) for the unit's museum. Barrie was thrice wounded while a young infantry officer during the Second World War. After the regiment returned to Canada and reverted to reserve status. Barrie reenlisted and subsequently became a lieutenant-colonel and was commanding officer in 1965 when the Kitchener based Scots Fusiliers of Canada and the Highland Light Infantry of Canada (Cambridge) amalgamated. He was appointed Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment in 1989, serving in that capacity until 1992. He is survived by his wife, Tal who he married in 1945, three sons, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Visitation and Funeral service is Wed. Dec. 2 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home.
