    Notes:

Andrew Elliott, a son of a Scottish immigrant to North Dumfries Township, was a great reader, which helped to prepare him to be a particularly competent lecturer on agricultural subjects.

He was an expert in livestock judging and judged in many parts of Canada and the United States. Greatly interested in Farmers' Institutes, he lectured for them in every province and twelve American states.

Elliott retired from farming in 1904 but continued judging livestock and lecturing until 1920. He also supervised twelve demonstration farms in Eastern Canada for the Dominion Department of Agriculture. A number of wealthy New England farmers commissioned him to go to Great Britain to purchase purebred sheep to improve their flocks.

He was an active member of the South Waterloo Agricultural Society for forty years, a member of the Kirk Session of Knox Presbyterian Church, Galt and a staunch Liberal.

    Notes:

Cuts Down a Bright Young Life - Terribly Sudden Death of Miss Effie Elliott, of North Dumfries.

Surprise and regret were freely expressed here Thursday, when it was announced that Miss Effie Elliott, of North Dumfries, had died at an early hour, that morning. Few, if any, were aware that she was ill and indeed, it could scarcely be said that she was ill at all. Deceased attended church twice on Sunday and was as bright, happy and healthy looking as usual and little thought they who conversed with the young lady that day, that the form then so full of life would so soon be still and cold in death. On Tuesday afternoon she complained of feeling ill and a physician was summoed, but he did not think that her condition was serious. On Wednesday, she was progressing favorably and continued to do so throughout the day. About 7 o'clock in the evening, Mr. Wm. Elliott, brother of deceased, left for town to meet his father, who has been addressing Farmers Institute meetings, in Eastern Ontario for the past three weeks and was to arrive on the 9: 35 C.P.R. train. When he left home the sister was apparently so much better that he did not think It necessary to call and see the doctor then in town. When father and son arrived home, about 11 p.m., the sick girl was no worse, although there was a look about her the father did not like. She was somewhat restless, but suffered no pain. Occasionally she would ask to be turned, apparently not being able to turn herself. Shortly after 3 o'clock, she asked her father to change her position, which he did. A few moments afterwards, she told him he had better send for the doctor. Mr. Wm. Elliott was immediately aroused, but before he got away the bright young life had gone out. She passed quietly and peacefully away, at 3.20 a.m., conscious to the last. When the physicians arrived they, of course, could not do anything. They ascribe death to a rupture of some sort. Effie R. Elliott was the second daughter of Mr. Andrew Elliott and was aged only 22 years and 3 months. She was a particularly bright young lady, possessed of a kindly and lovable disposition, one of the most popular ladies in the community and a general favorite with all with whom she came in contact. Her early and terribly sudden death will be sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Her death is the first break in the family. Deceased was Secretary of Waterloo County W.C.T.U., having been appointed to that position at the last annual meeting. The funerai of the late Effie Elliott, daughter of Mr. Andrew Elliott, took place on Christmas afternoon from her father's residence, to Mount View cemetery. The deceased was exceedingly popular and the number of people who followed the cortege to the graveyard was very large, an eloquent tribute to the memory of the young lady who had been cut down, while yet in the spring time of life. Funerals never tend to make one merry, but such a one as the above is productive of real sorrow. The late Effie Elliott was a Joyous and light-hearted girl and her demise was so sudden and untimely, that but few knew she was ill before the intelligence came of her death. The gloom that has been cast by the sad event is only too real and It will be long before the effects of the shock which it caused to the feelings of. those who knew her ceases to be felt. Rev. Dr. Jackson conducted the services and peculiarly solemn and impressive they were. The floral tributes were very beautIful. Wreaths and bouquets of snow white flowers, the color most appropriate. bore silent testimony to the general grief. The pall-bearers were Messrs. George Telfer, Robert Elliott, Paul Nelson, James Cowan, William Hunter and Thomas Chisholm.
