Death of John M. Bender

The death took place on Tuesday last at his home in Wilmot and South Easthope Townline of a well known and highly respected resident of this neighborhood in the person of Mr. John M. Bender at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 13 days. The deceased had been in failing health for the past six months, but had been able to be about until a few days before his death, when he sunk rapidly and passed away. The late Mr. Bender was born in Wilmot Township, the son of the late John Bender. After his marrage in 1870 to Catharine Ruby he lived in East Zorra for six years, but for nearly 40 years he followed the occupation of farming on the place where he died. Three years ago he retired and came to New Hamburg for a short time after which he made his home with his son Joseph. Mr. Bender was a successful farmer and beloved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his widow, four sons and one daughter, namely: Joseph, John and Moses of Wilmot, Sam uel J. of New Hamburg, and Annie at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Solomon olomon and David of East Zorra, and Samuel of New Hamburg. The funeral took place on Thursday forenoon to the 16th line Cemetery, East Zora. We extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy.

Bender.--Annie, daughter of John M. and Catherine Bender, was born in East Zorra, Ont., Feb. 28, 1872; passed away at the home of her brother, Joseph J. Bender, April 27, 1945; aged 73 y. 1 m. 29 d. In 1877 her parents moved to Wilmot Twp. where she made her home until the death of her mother in July, 1927. Since then she made her home with her brothers, helping where she was most needed. In early youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized by her grandfather, Bishop Joseph Ruby of the East Zorra congregation, remaining a faithful and consistent member until the end. She was of a cheerful disposition and manifested a meek and quiet spirit which is in the sight of God of great price. Surviving are 4 brothers (Joseph, John, and Moses, of Wilmot; and Samuel, of New Hamburg), one adopted sister (Catherine--Mrs. Chris K. Bender, of East Zorra), 9 nephews, and 7 nieces. Services were conducted at the home and at the East Zorra A.M. Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Samuel J. Bender Dies Suddenly

Stricken with a sudden heart attack early last Friday morning, Mr. Samuel J. Bender died unexpectedly shortly afterwards at the age of 68 years. He had retired the evening before in apparent good health. Mr. Bender was a lifelong resident of this community and was well and favorably known in the district.

He was a son of the late John M. Bender and Catharine Ruby and was born May 12, 1881, on th Bender homestead adjoining the western limits of New Hamburg. He was married on Jan. 3, 1904, to Fannie Baechler of South Easthope. He was a resident of New Hamburg for the past 35 years and for the past 20 years was local salesman for the Viking Cream Separator Co. The deceased was a member of Steinman A.M. Church.

Surviving besides his wife, are two daughters, Matilda, at home, and Mrs. Solomon (Alma) Roth, New Hamburg; two brothers, Moses and Joseph of Wilmot Township, and one sister, Mrs. Christian (Katie) Bender, New Hamburg. A brother, John, and one sister, Anna, predeceased him. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late home, Huron St., to Steinman A.M. Church for service and interment in the Steinman Cemetery. Bishop Moses O. Jantzi officiated. The funeral was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Zehr, Ruth Loraine (Bender)

Passed away peacefully with family at her side on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Grand River Hospital, KW Health Centre, Kitchener at the age of 84. Ruth was born in Wilmot Township, a daughter of the late Mahlon Bender and former Selena Ruby.

Beloved wife of Ron Zehr whom she married on July 28, 1956. Cherished mother and grandmother to Bob and wife Connie Zehr and their children Celene & Eric; Don and wife Wendy Cressman Zehr and their children Tess and partner Jake and Michaela; Lynn and wife Julie Zehr and their son Blake; Will and wife Shannon Zehr and their son Lliam; Kathy Zehr and her children Elisabeth, Malcolm and Sheldon; and Mike and wife Denise Maurer and their children Mike, Matthew and Marc. Ruth is survived by her sister Marj Kaethler and brother Cleo Bender and his wife Joan, sisters-in-law Katie Bender and Joyce Zehr and brother-in-law Glenn Zehr and wife Mary Ellen as well as by her many nieces, nephews and extended families. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law Vernon and wife Katie Zehr, Art and wife Dorothy Bender, Olive and husband Orville Bender, Armand Bender, Lillian and husband Sam Lichty and Daniel Zehr.

Ruth was a member of Hillcrest Mennonite Church, New Hamburg. Ruth was a long-time volunteer of the Wilmot Horticultural Society and the New Hamburg Thrift Centre and in her later years became an Author.

Family and friends are invited to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg, on Thursday, July 18, 2019 from 2 \endash 4 & 7 \endash 9 p.m. for a time of memorial visiting. The funeral service will take place on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Mennonite Church, New Hamburg with Pastors Jan Steckley and Kevin Peters Unrau officiating. Interment in the 19 th Line East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery.

ROTH, Elmer Stanley Passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at his residence in Baden after a brief illness with bile duct cancer. He was born 67 years ago in New Hamburg and was the son of the late Solomon N. and Alma (Bender) Roth. Beloved husband of Leola (Gingerich) Roth whom he married July 20, 1968. Loving father of Ryan and wife Sara Roth of New Hamburg, Ron Roth of Baden and Marilyn Roth of London, England. Sadly missed by his grandsons Owen, Adam, Isaac and Nate.
