David Erb, "the eldest of the family, was born in Pennsylvania, February 21st, 1797. He was nine years of age when his parents moved to Canada and settled in this County. He was married to Nancy, eldest daughter of George and Barbara (Wenger) Eby. She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, October 13th, 1801, and died March 4th, 1887. Soon after their marriage they moved a little north-east of the town of Waterloo, on the farm now possessed by Jacob Groff. Here they resided many years, but after their family was raised they sold the farm and moved to Bridgeport, Ontario, where they resided until his death which took place August 25th, 1883. After his death she had her home with her daughter, Susan, who resides in Thedford, Huron County, where she died a few years afterwards. They had a family of ten children"

Bridgeport United Church

The early Evangelical Association congregations in Berlin and Waterloo date back to August 1839 when a Camp Meeting was held over a number of days at David Erb's farm (Lot 7, German Company Tract) at Lexington. Classes (or congregations) in Berlin and in Waterloo were organized at that meeting by Bishop John Seybert - on August 29th. Twenty-six charter members were divided into the two classes. Class leader for Waterloo and vicinity was Jacob Hoffman. His brother, John, was class leader for Berlin.

The Waterloo class, along with classes at Lexington and Breslau, was connected to the Berlin Mission until the organization of the Canada Conference of the Evangelical Association in 1864. The Waterloo Mission was formed at that time. In 1866 the Breslau class was merged with the Lexington class and in 1876 the Lexington class, with 31 members, was referred to as the Bridgeport class for the first time.

An old log schoolhouse was purchased in 1879 for $500.00 on condition that it be used only for Sunday School services, not for preaching. The exterior walls were covered with lumber and the building was dedicated on November 9, 1879. A new white brick church was built ten years later, in 1889, when the old schoolhouse became inadequate for the growing congregation. This church was in use until 1934 when the present building was completed. A decision had been made at a congregational meeting in July 1933 to proceed with construction of a new church. The ground-breaking service was held on August 28, 1933 and on October 1 of that year the cornerstone was laid by Rev. W.J. Zimmerman. Dedication services were held in the new red brick church on Sunday March 18, 1934. In 1942 the old brick church was sold to Mr. Minnacker for $100. An addition which was built on to the west side of the church in 1958 provided additional space for the Sunday School, as well as offices and a kitchen. The new complex was dedicated on November 30, 1958 with Professor John F. Schaefer of Naperville, Illinois preaching the dedication sermon.

Bridgeport and Waterloo were a joint parish from 1876 until 1910, when Bridgeport was joined with Strasburg. This association lasted until 1914 when Bridgeport called its own full-time pastor. The Evangelical Church joined with the United Brethren in Christ Church on November 16, 1946 to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. On January 1, 1968 when the Evangelical United Brethren joined with the United Church, Emmanuel's name was changed once again - to Emmanuel United Church. In February 1987 the congregation voted to change the name of the church to Bridgeport United Church.

Rev. J. Kaechele (1864-1865) was pastor in 1864 when the Waterloo Mission was formed; Solomon Kraft was the Bridgeport class leader when the schoolhouse was bought in 1879 and Rev. S.R. Knechtel (1888-1891) was pastor in 1889 when the new white brick church was built.

Zion United Church

A Sunday School was established in Berlin in 1837, meeting in Jacob Hailer's carpenter shop which was located at the southeast corner of what is now King and Scott Streets. A mission was begun by Rev. Christian Holl shortly after his arrival in Berlin on May 9, 1839, and a class (or congregation) was organized several months later on August 29, 1839 by Bishop John Seybert of the Evangelical Association during a camp meeting held at David Erb's farm near Lexington. John Hoffman was the Berlin class leader; his brother, Jacob, was class leader for the Waterloo-Lexington congregation. The Berlin congregation met in the old Town Hall until their first church was built in 1841 on Queen Street South across from Church Street on land purchased as of August 24, 1841 from Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schneider. The church was dedicated on September 25th of that year, with Rev. Christian Hummel of Buffalo, New York, officiating. Rev. Joseph Harlacher was pastor from 1840-1842. In 1842 the Waterloo Mission became a Circuit of the East Pennsylvania Conference. Two years later it was part of the New York Conference.

The second church building was built of brick on the same site in 1866, and dedicated in 1867; Rev. C.A. Spies was pastor at the time. The old frame church was sold and moved to Elgin Street where it was used as a dwelling. In the same year Berlin became a station.

The present church building was built in 1893 on Weber Street; dedication services were held on June 15, 16 and 17, 1894. This building was heavily damaged by fires in 1942 and 1965 but was renovated and restored each time.

The union of the Evangelical Church and the United Brethren in Christ Church on November 16, 1946 created the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The name of the church was to change again, to Zion United Church when the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined the United Church of Canada on January 1, 1968. Of interest: some maps of early Berlin show this church as a German Methodist church.

Emmanuel United Church

The first Evangelical missionaries arrived in the Waterloo area in 1837. The first Waterloo class (congregation) was formed on August 29, 1839 by Bishop John Seybert during a camp meeting at David Erb's farm near Lexington. Jacob Hoffman was the Waterloo-Lexington class leader; his brother, John, was class leader in Berlin. A brick building which was erected by Samuel Burkholder in 1849 on Church Street, near King, was offered to the congregation for their use as a church, rent free, provided that they agreed to finish and furnish the building. Dedication of the new church was in 1851. The house, known as Burkholder House, is still standing, but Church Street in Waterloo is now known as Central Street.

In the early 1890s Waterloo was in the North District of the Canada Conference of the Evangelical Association, and was ministered to jointly with Bridgeport. Pastors in those years were Revs. C.R. Knechtel (1890-1891), F. Meyer (1892), D. Kreh (1893), and W.J. Yaeger (1894).

A new church, which was built in 1871 at the corner of Cedar and Water Streets (now Bridgeport Road and Dorset Street), was replaced in 1905 by the present structure. Dedication was in May, 1906. Emmanuel Hall was built in 1938. Changes made in 1963 included an addition, a new front entrance and renovation of the former Christian Education area.

On November 16, 1946 the Evangelical Church joined with congregations of the United Brethren in Christ Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church. When the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined the United Church of Canada as of January 1, 1968, Emmanuel became a United Church..

She died November 13th, 1874, and he died January 2nd, 1885. After their marriage they resided in this county, near Berlin, but in 1837 they moved to New York State where he entered into the mercantile business for three years when, in 1840, he moved on a farm where he resided for eleven years. In 1851 he went into the mercantile business again, continuing the same for three years. Some time during the year 1854 he retired from business and entered the ministry. He was engaged in preaching for several years. He resided at Clarence, Erie County, New York. Their family consisted of six children"

A Former Inhabitant

A former inhabitant of Waterloo County, Abraham Erb, died in Sarnia on February 25th He was born in 1814 on Gibson's farm near Berlin, at that time the property of Jakob Erb. Jakob Erb came to Canada from Pennsylvania 100 years ago. Of his 13 children, only 80-year old Mrs. Reitzel still lives near St. Jacobs. Several children attained a great age. The mother-in-law of Mr. Phil Breiding, who lives here, was 84 years old at her death 14 years ago. The body of the late Abraham Erb was brought to Blair by his four sons living in Grand Rapids and buried beside his wife, whose maiden name was Clemens.

Isaac Erb, "fourth son of Jacob and Salome (Graybill) Erb, was born in the township and county of Waterloo, Ontario, July 23rd, 1817. He was a twin brother to Elizabeth (Mrs. Anton Reitzel). His father's old homestead where all the children were born, is now possessed by Mr. Gibson and the farm forms part of the town of Berlin. On March 4th, 1839, he was married in Lancaster, Erie County, New York, to Maria A., daughter of Beriah and Charlotte Hillman. She was born May 17th, 1817, in Otsego County, New York, and died at Bowmansville, New York, July 30th, 1848. After her decease the husband (Isaac Erb) married again. His second wife was Cynthia, daughter of Frederick and Lucy Ayer. She was born at Amherst, New York, March 13th, 1817, and died at Flint, Michigan, March 5th, 1880. He died in Washington, D. C., August 14th, 1892. His family consisted of seven children"

Sarah Erb, "the eldest of the named family, was born December 10th, 1820, and was first married to William Tohman. Their family consisted of two children, Lydia Ann, and Levi. Lydia Ann was married to John Thaler. She died a few years ago, leaving a family of several children, all grown. Levi belongs to the Regulars of the English Army. During his services he has been stationed at Gibraltar, Malta, Windsor, London, Liverpool, and at present he is in southern England. After the decease of her first husband she was married to Daniel Burkholder who died April 11th, 1891. She still resides in Bridgeport, Ontario."

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Death of Mrs. Seibert - The death occurred on Thursday of Mrs. Elizabeth Seibert, relict of the late Jacob Seibert, who died several months ago. The deceased was in her 81st year and has been ill for some weeks. She has been residing with her son, Jacob S. Seibert, Albert Street. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 o'clock from her son's residence, Albert Street, to the Bridgeport Cemetery.

The grim reaper, death, called rather suddenly from this life's work an old resident of this neighborhood, Menno Musselman, who passed away on Sunday. On Friday he was working in the fields yet, but was forced to quit by severe pains in the hip. He expected an attack of rheumatism, from which he had suffered on former occasions, but the dreaded pneumonia soon developed and carried him off. Deceased was unmarried and stayed with his twin brother Joseph, who will no doubt feel the separation keenly.
The remains of the late Menno Musselman were interred in the Mennonite Cemetery west of Elmira on Wednesday of last week in presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Rev'ds A. Gingrich and Silas Bauman conducted the services, and six nephews of deceased acted as pall bearers. Deceased leaves one brother, 3 sisters and many relatives.

Weidman. -Barbara (Eby) Weidman was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., June 15, 1828; died Sept. 4, 1918; age 90 y. 2 m. 18 d. On Dec. 21, 1847 she was married to Henry Weidman. They lived in Woolwich township a number of years, then moved to Hay township, Huron Co., Ont., on a farm where they resided until the death of her husband in May, 1897. In the same year she moved to Huron Co., Mich., and had her home with her children. She is survived by six children (Elias, Moses, Menno, Mrs. Magadalena Reist, Henry and Mrs. Lydia Detweiler). One son preceded her in death. There are also living 30 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one sister and four brothers. Her health was failing for the last six months. Her desire for the last few years was to go to Jesus. The funeral was conducted on Sept. 7 by Bro. Menno Eash. Buried in the Bern Mennonite Cemetery.

Isaac E. Baumann, "was born August 17th, 1832. He is the eldest son of a family of ten children. His father was among the early settlers of the township of Woolwich and resided on the north bank of the Conestogo River, at St. Jacobs, where Mr. Baumann was born. At the age of twenty he commenced life as a public school teacher. He found sufficient time during his life as a teacher to keep himself posted on all questions pertaining to the political problems of the day. He has always taken an active part during the various political campaigns in our county. In 1864 he was nominated and elected as member for the last parliament for old Canada, by the Reform party, defeating the Honorable Michael Hamilton Foley by a handsome majority. In 1867, when the Confederation was formed, he was re-elected by acclamation, and again in 1871, and in 1874, but during the campaign of 1878 he was defeated, September 17th, by the Conservative candidate. In 1891 the Reform Convention again brought out Mr. Baumann as the standard bearer of their party. At the close of the polls it was found that Mr. Baumann had gained quite a majority of votes over his opponent, the Conservative candidate. Since then he has held the seat in the House of Commons, discharging its duties with a degree of ability complimentary to himself and highly satisfactory to his constituents. He is president of the Ontario Fire & Life Insurance Companies and also of the Mercantile Insurance Co. At present he resides in the town of Waterloo. He is married to Lydia, daughter of Jacob and Anna (Bowers) Bowman. They have a family of two sons"

Isaac Erb Bowman, of Waterloo, the subject of this sketch, was born in the township of Woolwich, in the County of Waterloo, Ontario, 1832. Here he was brought up, and here he attended school, subsequently entering the Rockwood Academy till he was prepared to begin and make his way in the world. Our subject is the son of John B. Bowman, a gentleman well known for high character; and his mother was Lydia, nee Erb. When Isaac reached his eighteenth year he had not made up his mind with respect to an avocation ; but he had a good education, and an opportunity presenting, he entered a school as master. He liked the profession of teaching, took pride in his work, and was very successful. As a teacher he remained employed till 1860, when certain allurements lay beyond the teaching profession. But in the meantime Mr. Bowman had not confined himself exclusively to the duties of the class room. In 1857 he became clerk of the township of Woolwich, and held the position till 1873. In 1858 he was appointed treasurer for the same municipality, and he holds this position at the present time. Those who had watched his career for some years, (included that he had excellent qualifications for parliament, so the electors of North Waterloo, in 1864, elected him as their representative in the Legislative Assembly of Canada ; and again in 1867 to represent them in the House of Commons, and this seat he held until 1878. Mr. Bowman was always what was known as a "solid" representative, and his judgment could always be relied upon. Mr. Bowman is president of the Ontario Mutual Life Insurance Company, and this position he has held since the organization of the company in 1870. He is likewise president of the Mercantile Fire Insurance Company, and a director of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1860 ; and has always taken a deep interest in the progress of moral movements. He is a prominent member of the Methodist communion. In 1857 he married Nancy Kaufman, daughter of Andrew Kaufman, late of Preston. She died in 1858. He married again, in 1861, Lydia Bowman, daughter of .1. W. Bowman.

He adopted the tanning business in 1857, which he has pursued with uniform success ever since ; and is at present a partner of the tanning firm of Bowman A: Zinkan, of Southampton, and is carrying on a kip tannery at St. Jacob on his own account.

ISAAK E. BAUMANN

It is our sad duty to bring to our readers the news of the death of the widely-known and highly respected Mr. Isaak E. Baumann who died at 4a.m. Friday morning at his residence in Waterloo of abdominal hemorrhaging. He was the son of John B. Baumann and Lydia, nee Erb, and was born August 17, 1832 in Woolwich. He attained the age of 65 years and 17 days.

After attending public school, he prepared himself at the Rockwood Academy for the teaching profession which he began at the age of 18 years and continued until 1860. In 1857 he became clerk and, in 1858, treasurer of the township of Woolwich, which offices he continued until 1885.

In 1864 he was elected representative of North Waterloo in the Legislative Assembly of Canada, and after confederation had been achieved in 1867, as a member in the Dominion Parliament which seat he held until 1878, and then again, from 1887 - 1896, at which time he refused the nomination for re-election.

He enjoyed in this capacity the full trust of the Liberals, for whom he did more in North Waterloo than any other man. He worked tirelessly for the organization of the party and at election-time, took part with the greatest enthusiasm, whether or not he was a candidate. At these times, his excellent talents as a speaker stood him in good stead. Despite the fact that he had not had any German education of note, he was well versed in the German language and knew how to express himself just as fluently as in English. With firm decisiveness in political matters, he combined proper treatment of his opponents in elections, along with modest simple, friendly behaviour in personal relations, and was, consequently, loved and respected by all classes. He will be sorely missed not only in this county, but also in wider circles. Among parliamentarians without regard to party affiliations, he was regarded as an active and useful representative whose opinion in all matters was respected.

Since the founding of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1863, he was the manager of the same, and since 1875, president of the Mercantile Fire Insurance Company in Waterloo, which was amalgamated with the London & Lancashire Insurance Co. in 1896. In addition, he was president of the Ontario Life Insurance Society, which position he held from 1871 to 1897 without interruption. In every way, his advice was found reliable and his judgment definitive.

In respect to business, he was the owner of tanneries in St. Jacobs, Port Elgin and Southampton, which he ran with financial success. In 1857, he married Nancy Kaufmann of Preston, who however, died the following year. Since 1861 he has been married to Lydia Baumann, daughter of Jakob W. Baumann. He is survived by 2 sons: Charles & Frederick, who run the tannery in Southampton.

At the burial on Tuesday, a great many mourners from near and far were present. After a short service in the Methodist church, the body was accompanied by a large number of mourners to St. Jacobs, the birthplace and former residence of the deceased and buried in the cemetery there.

In 1864 he was elected as a Liberal to the last parliament of old Canada, and represented with distinction the north riding of Waterloo from 1864 to1878 and from 1887 to1896.

Bowman was senior member of the firm of Bowman and Zinkan that operated tanneries in St. Jacobs, Port Elgin and Southampton. He was one of the founders of the Ontario Mutual Life Assurance Company (now the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada) and was president from 1870 to 1897. He was also president of the Mercantile Fire Insurance Company.

King Street, Kitchener

Next, well back and at the bottom of a slope from King Street, was the back of Gaukel's Hotel, extending back to Hall's Lane.

Gaukel's was the first considerable Hotel in Berlin. Frederick Gaukel, who had come from Pennsylvania in 1820, purchased a tract of lots in 1833 from Joseph Schneider on the westerly corner of Queen and King Streets, the site formerly occupied by Phineas Vemum's blacksmith shop, and thereon erected a two story frame building with a wide Colonial style veranda. Candidates at election spoke from this veranda to the crowd on the street, and it had other like uses. The little house standing in the rear, which Phineas Varnum had used for a tavern, was used as a kitchen. The hotel woodshed came next. It was a frame building.

When judges came to Berlin for County Court they stayed at this hotel and Henry Stroh would be asked to forage for speckled trout and partridge, Mr. Gaukel wishing to place something special before his distinguished guests. In 1851 Gaukel had a bear tied by a chain to a post in the barnyard on King Street. There was a cross board on top of the post to which the bear could climb and become a public exhibition. In the early years Indians, wrapped in their government blankets, were in the habit of calling at the house for something to eat. The woods along the Conestoga River abounded in butternuts and these, gathered in the fall, served to entertain the guests on Sunday afternoons. Henry Bachman was an early bartender at the hotel.

Frederick Gaukel died in 1853. His son George thereafter had the hotel for one year, paying $140.00 rent to the Estate. James Potter, who came from Bridgeport, then bought the place and changed its name to The Great Western Hotel. He took down the heavy colonial veranda and replaced it with a new one of iron posts and iron railings. The veranda continued to be a rostrum for political orators. Hon. Michael Hamilton Foley, Post Master General, and Mr. I. E. Bowman, for many years Member of Parliament for North Waterloo, spoke from it. Potter had a large swinging sign on a post at the corner facing King Street. On a windy day 'the squeak of the swinging sign could be heard throughout the village. On the sign were the proprietor's name, the name of the hotel and a picture of The Great Eastern Steamship, by far the largest ship of its time.

St. Jacob's, Ont.. June 12-David Bowman, aged about 65, a resident of Berlin, was visiting at his sister's, Mrs. Filsinger, on Sunday, June 2. He disappeared the following morning, and this morning his body was found floating in E. W. B. Snider's mill dam.

Well Known Berlin Manufacturer Succumbs on Saturday, After Long Illness

Was in His 69 Year

One of Berlin's oldest and highly esteemed citizens, passed away about 6 o'clock on Saturday evening, in the person of Mr. Isaac E. Shantz, the well-known senior member of the firm of I. E. Shantz & Co., at his home on College street. The deceased suffered from congestion of the lungs at the time of his death and had been in poor health during the last ten months. The late I. E. Shantz was born on May 23rd, 1839 and was a son of the late Samuel Shantz, who owned one of the finest farms in the county on the Petersburg-Road, three miles west of Berlin. After securing a common school education and working on his fathers farm, for some years, he entered a mercantile business in Bridgeport and also became interested in several successful manufacturing industries. About fifteen years ago he moved to Berlin and after conducting the store now occupied by Beck & Schell for some years, he purchased the foundry which he has been conducting, for the last ten or twelve years. The deceased was of a quiet and unassuming disposition and while he took a keen interest in municipal affairs of Berlin and was a member of the Town Council, in 1897. He was a devoted Christian man and was highly respected by all with whom he came in contact. He was married to Magdalena Eby in 1860, who survives him and we regret to state, is quite ill. There are five children; Josiah, Berlin, Edmund, Waterloo Tp., Mrs. Amos Groff, Waterloo, Mrs. (Rev,) C. R. Miller, Berlin and Milton B., who will have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, at 1: 30 o'clock, to the East End Mennonite church and Cemetery.

Menno E. Shantz

The death took place on Monday evening last at the home of his son, Mr. Wm. Shantz, east of Petersburg, Mr. Menno E. Shantz, a well-known and highly respected retired farmer, in his 80th year. Deceased had been in good health until Thursday last when he suffered a stroke and remained unconscious until his death. He was born on the old Shantz farm a few miles west of Waterloo. In 1864 he was married to Barbara Rudy, who predeceased him twenty years ago. After their marriage they took up their residence on the farm near Petersburg where he continued farming until the death of Mrs. Shantz, when he retired and has since made his home with his son William on the old homestead. There survive three sons and three daughters, namely: Cleason and Nelson of Waterloo, William R., Petersburg; Angeline (Mrs. Sam Snyder), New Dundee; Maria, (Mrs. Weber), Natchez; Clara (Mrs. Ivan Cressman), Wilmot. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon to the Waterloo Mennonite church and cemetery

Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church

The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.
Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.
Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.

Anthony Reitzel

Last Monday death claimed another of the pioneers of this district, in the person of Mr. Anthony Reitzel. Mr. Reitzel formerly owned the farm now occupied by Mr. Adam Mattusch one mile north of Elmira, but for several years has been living with his children, part of the time in the West. Deceased visited in Elmira only a few weeks ago, going from here to Millbank to visit his daughter, Mrs. Solomon Wolfe, where he was taken sick last week. He had reached the age of 77 years.

Five children are left to mourn his death, namely, three sons, Edward and Edgar, in the West, and Edwin in Kitchener, and two daughters, Mrs. Solomon Wolfe, of Millbank, and Mrs. DeRoux, of New Ontario. The funeral took place from the home of Mr. Solomon Wolfe on Wednesday, to Elmira Union Cemetery for burial. Service was held in the Evangelical Church after burial.

Visits Berlin After 41 Years

Mr. Levi Thoman, a Great Grandson of First White Man in Berlin

Mr. Levi Erb Thoman born on Albert street, Berlin in the year 1851 has returned after an absence of 41 years, the year of the Friedenfes celebration. Mr. Thoman's great grandfather George Eby was the first white man to set foot in Berlin. When on the journey to Berlin from Pennsylvania one of the girls of the Eby family, aged twelve went in advance of the party carrying one of her smaller brothers. Discovering what appeared to be a large dog up a tree, she went back and told her father, who got out his flint lock and brought down what proved to be a "painter" or panther.

Old George Eby was a veterinary surgeon, a horse doctor, as they were known in those days. He built his log house at wing street, east, opposite Eby street, where the street is to be opened to Elgin street.

Mr. Thoman recounts many historical points of interest about Berlin. He has been in Great Britain, France and Spain for the last 38 years, where he practiced the profession of herbalist. He has acquired a decided English accent but still speaks the German language. He left this afternoon. During his stay in Berlin he met very few of his old acquaintances.
