Main narrowly escapes grave
Walter Gowing, Cambridge: This is the first of a three-part series honouring our troops who fought in Korea. It takes us to Remembrance Day, Nov.11. Walter Gowing was in South Korea earlier this year. Dig faster," shouted a soldier of the Royal Canadian Regiment as he and his buddies scooped the fresh earth with their bare hands.Three RCRs were on their knees throwing dirt from a new mound of Korean soil that had appeared in the middle of their camp, only moments before."God, don't let him die," screamed one of the young men as his hands flung the dirt between his legs like a dog frantically digging for a bone. It was a matter of life and death to reach the smothering man buried below. Finally, one of the battling diggers cried out, "I've got him," and all three soldiers joyously pulled, Wilfred George Main, from beneath the pile of earth that was surely to become his grave in a matter of minutes.Wilf Main was born in his parents house in Branchton and moved to Cambridge, in 1963. He was a 30-year employee of Butler Metal Products. He died on June 30, 2006 in his 74th year. His wife, the former Shirley Poore, predeceased him in 1997. They had nine children, 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.A better than average horseshoe player, he liked also to play a variety of card games and was proficient at woodworking. A quiet unassuming person at home in Cambridge, this man could battle the enemy on front line duty in foreign countries in a fight for liberty and freedom.A veteran of two military terms that took him to the front lines of the Korean War, 1950-53, and later to duty in Europe, Main had been a paratrooper and an infantryman, with experience in the tank corps and artillery. While manning an outpost camp on the front lines in the hills of Korea - where Canadian troops were facing more Chinese soldiers than North Koreans - Main had an unbelievable experience that almost extinguished his life. There were shells flying about but none had come close to the small group of Canadians holding this hilltop position. Then suddenly, Main heard the whiz of a shell coming in his direction. As he dropped down on his hands and knees, everything went black. He was totally covered with earth. The shell had exploded right next to him creating a big crater and completely covering him with several feet of displaced earth. He was buried alive. His brave buddies pounced on the huge mound of earth and started to dig. After his rescue, they all sat around and laughed. There was one bit of humour in all of this near tragedy. When the shell hit the ground, the force of the explosion was so great that it had blown Main's big army boots right off his feet. They found the boots about three metres away from the spot where he had been when the shell exploded. Hours later, when all was quiet on Strategic Hill AB, the 12 courageous Canadian soldiers were replaced by 60 Americans, who eventually lost the position to the North Koreans. A few days later, the Canadians returned and recaptured the important outlook post. Wilfred George Main.
