    Leis.- John, son of Joseph and Magdalene Schwartzentruber, was born in Wellesley Twp., Ont., July 4, 1903; died at Couts' Pavilion, Kitchener, Feb. 21, 1977; aged 73 y. On Feb. 23, 1927, he was married to Catherine Wagler, who preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 1975. Surviving are one son (Vernon), 3 daughters (Catherine) Bartman, Erma Steinmann, and (Florence) McFarlane, 2 brothers (Sidney and Elmer), and one sister (Edith). He was a member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Feb. 24, in charge of Elmer Schwartzentruber and Vernon Zehr; interment in adjoining cemetery.

    BARTMAN, Catherine Magdelena Leis - Our dear Mother passed away on July 18, 2007 at Nithview Home, New Hamburg. Catherine was born in Wellesley, Ontario on June 16, 1929 and was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Wagler) Leis. She moved to Toronto as a young woman where she trained at St. Michael's Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. For many years she worked at St. Michael's Hospital Emergency Department and later at The Hospital for Sick Children. Catherine also worked at Nursing Homes in Toronto, Kitchener and finally in Palliative Care. Loving mother to her three daughters, Julia (Martin) Libling of Phoenix, AZ, Martha (Tobias) Heyworth of Havelock and Sandra Bartman of Waterloo. Sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kathryn and Adam Libling. Dear sister of Erma and Ervin Steinmann and Florence and Harold McFarlane all of New Hamburg and sister-in-law to Arvilla Leis of Tavistock and Jean Leis of Kitchener. Also remembered by Melvin Bartman of Dorset, Gordon Bartman of Willowdale and Doreen Hodgins of Powasson. Catherine was predeceased by her brothers, Vernon and Ralph Leis and brother-in-law, Wilbert Bartman. The family will receive friends at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. Interment at Steinmann Mennonite Church Cemetery, Baden. In memory of Catherine, donations to Nithview Home or the Alzheimer's Society would be appreciated.

    Vernon Roy, 60, Tavistock, Ont. Born: Nov. 23, 1933, Petersburg, Ont., to John and Catherine Wagler Leis. Died: Feb. 26, 1994, Baden, Ont., in a car accident. Survivors - wife: Arvilla Schultz Leis; children: Timothy, James, Paul, David, Katherine Bender; brother and sisters: Ralph, Catherine Bartman, Erma Steinmann, Florence McFarlane; 6 grandchildren. Funeral and burial: March 2, East Zorra Mennonite Church, by Darrel Toews. He was ordained in 1962 and pastored several Mennonite churches in Ontario. He served as the first moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada.

    The Rev. Vernon Roy Leis 60, of 39 Wellington Street, Tavistock passed away in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County on Saturday, February 26, 1994. Rev. Leis was born at Petersburg on November 23, 1933 a son of the late John Leis and the former Catherine Wagler. He was a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, Virginia Goshen Biblical Seminary and the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto. He had served as minister of Blenheim Mennonite Church 1961 -1966, Elmira Mennonite Church 1966-1980, Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church Kitchener 1980-1988 and East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th line from August 1988 until the time of his death. He was a former moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada and had served the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada and served the Mennonite Church in numerous other capacities. Rev. Leis is survived by his wife the former Arvilla Annie Schultz whom he married at Poole on July 2, 1955; four sons, Timothy and wife Anne Leis of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; James Leis of Carrboro, North Carolina; Paul and wife Marilyn Leis of RR 1, Elmwood; David Leis and wife Cheryl Nafziger-Leis of Elmira; one daughter, Katherine and husband Charles Bender of New Hamburg; six grandchildren, Karen, Jerome, Marina and Benjamin Leis of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Brandon and Kristin Leis of RR1, Elmwood; three sisters, Catherine Bartman of Waterloo, Erma and husband Ervin Steinmann of New Hamburg; Florence and husband Harold MacFarlane of New Hamburg; one brother, Ralph and wife Jean Leis of Kitchener; his mother-in-law Katie Schultz of Milverton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Betty and Joseph Grove of Hanover, Shirley and Herbert Schultz of Cambridge and John Schultz of New Hamburg. He is also loved and respected by nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends. Besides his parents John and Catherine Leis he was predeceased by his father-in-law Allan Schultz. Friends were received in the East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th line where the funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 2, 1994 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Darrel Toews, assisted by other clergy, officiated. Interment was in East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery, 16th line. Casket bearers were family members, Timothy Leis, James Leis, Paul Leis, David Leis, Katherine Bender, Charles I Bender and John Schultz.

    LEIS, Ralph -- Suddenly on Tuesday, April 21, 1998, age 55 years, at St. Mary's General Hospital. Ralph was a member of Trinity Evangelical Missionary Church and a 33 year employee with Sears in Kitchener. Loving husband of Jeanne Leis (nee Shantz); dear father of Jennifer and her husband Arsalan Shahi of Kitchener. Ralph was the special grandfather to Maral and her parents, Rahim and Narges Atabakhsh of Kitchener. Will be sadly missed by sisters, Catherine Bartman of Waterloo, Erma Steinmann and her husband Ervin, Florence McFarlane and her husband Harold, all of New Hamburg; sisters-in-law, Arvilla Leis of Tavistock, Lois Broder and her husband Tom of Milverton; brothers-in-law, Stanley Shantz and his wife Cindy of Baden; father-in-law, Stanley Shantz and his wife Eral of St. Jacobs. also survived by 23 nieces and nephews and a number of great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Catherine Wagler and John Leis; brother, Rev. Vernon Leis and his mother-in-law, Doris (Hachborn) Shantz. Ralph's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, today (Thursday) from 7 -9 p.m. and on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Saturday morning, 10 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Missionary Church, 330 Conservation Dr., Waterloo with Pastor Craig Arbon and Rev. Harvey Fretz officiating. Interment will follow at Shantz Mennonite cemetery.
