    Canadian Office And School Furniture Company Director Suffured a Heart Attack Near Post Office

    George Fink, Queen street, Preston, for many years identified with the Canadian Office and School Furniture Company here, died very suddenly early this afternoon while on the way to the office. He was in apparently good health when he left his home after lunch and it is understood he had reached the postoffiee when he collapsed. A resident of Preston for many years, the late Mr. Fink had been connected with the Canadian Office and School Furniture Company Limited, as a partner and secretary-treasurer of the concern before its amalgamation a year ago with the Preston Furniture Company. He occupied a place on the board of directors up to the time of his death, with the now company. Further details regarding his sudden passing will he published tomorrow.

    In association with Otto Klotz (the father of the Canadian Astronomer and Surveyor Dr. Otto Julius Klotz 1852-1923), George A. Clare, George Fink and William Hudson, they later formed the joint stock company "Canadian Office and School Furniture Co." (C.O.S.F.). This company expanded very quickly - as well as they also produced bureaux and church furnishings. It is said that C.O.S.F. outfitted 1250 Canada bank offices. In 1908 they had about 125-180 employees.

    TORONTO (CP) - Thomas E. Fink, 52, prominent industrialist from Preston, died in hospital here last night after he became ill on a business trip. A native of Preston, he was general manager of the Canadian Office and School Furniture Co. and a director of the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital Corporation. He is survived by his widow, a daughter and three sons.

    A lifelong resident of Preston, Mrs. Wesley B. Ashley of 392 Guelph St. S., died this morning at South Waterloo Memorial Hospital. She was 68.

    A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church the former Margaret Fink is survived by her husband, Wesley B. (Dad) Ashley; two sons, John G. and Douglas W., both of Kitchener; one daughter, Patricia N. of Toronto; two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Carrie May) Barringham of Oakville and Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Scroggins of Cambridge (Galt) and five grandchildren.

    Mrs. Ashley is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, corner of Queen and Argyle streets, Cambridge (Preston) until noon Thursday. Funeral and committal services will be held from St. Peter's Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Preston Cemetery.

    Arrangments have been completed for funeral services for Georgina Elizabeth Fink, 21 year old daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Fink and the late George D. Fink, who died at her home yesterday with an infection, after a four week illness. It will be held Saturday afternoon at the home of her mother, 754 Queen street, at 2 o'clock, thence to St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2: 30 where Rev. W. H. Knauff will conduct services. Interment will be made in Preston Cemetery.

    John Ashley was born in Galt and lived in Preston until Grade 12. John played minor hockey in Preston, later he played for the Toronto Marlboros and the Guelph Biltmores. Ashley signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1950, and in the ensuing three years, played for their Pittsburgh farm team in the AHL. Ashley sought and gained reinstatement as an amateur in 1954. He then played three years with Stratford in Senior A hockey.

    Ashley became interested in officiating in 1957. By 1959 he signed a contract to officiate in the NHL. Ashley spent eighteen years in the NHL - thirteen as a referee and five as a scout and councillor to referees.

    Ashley refereed 1075 games. Of this, 622 were regular NHL games and fifty-eight were NHL play-off games. In the last eight of his thirteen on ice seasons Ashley was rated the NHL's number one referee. Ashley's overall record in Stanley Cup play-offs was one of high quality performance, under sustained pressure, over a period of ten years.

    On September 15, 1981, John Ashley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

    JOHN G. ASHLEY 1930 - 2008 At St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener on Saturday, January 5, 2008 in his 78th year. Loving husband of June Ashley (nee Millman) for 56 years. Devoted father of Kristine Bailey and her husband, Dennis and Tom Ashley and his wife Cindy. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Julie Bailey and her husband Adam, Tom Bailey, Sami, Wes and Zac Ashley. Survived by his brother, Doug Ashley. Predeceased by his parents, Wesley and Margaret Ashley as well as his sister, Pat Ashley. John Ashley was born in Galt and lived in Preston. Friends will be received at the Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge, on Saturday Oct. 23 (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral and committal services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1993, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Rachel Dart officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in Preston Cemetery.
