He lived for a time on a farm in Normanby Township, and later at Lamlash, Ont., after which he moved to Kitchener.

He is survived by the sorrowing widow, five sons and three daughters, namely: Charles, of Elmwood, Ont.; Edward, Clymont, Alta.; Wm. of Young, Sask.; Harman, Louisa and Lavina at home, and Clara, Mrs. F. Daber, 25 Tuerk St., Kitchener. One son, Walter, was killed in action in France, Nov. 6, 1917. He leaves also two brothers, five sisters and one grandchild.

The funeral was held from the family residence, 145 Wellington St., Kitchener, on Sunday, June 16th, at 2 p.m., to St. Matthews Lutheran Church and to Mount Hope Cemetery. Rev. J. Schmieder conducted the services.

    Elmira Citizen Passes Away

It becomes our sad and painful duty this week to chronicle the death of a well-known citizen of Elmira in the person of George W. Schierholtz, who passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning after two years illness of anemia. Deceased was born on the Schierholtz homestead, two miles east of Elmira on November 7th 1857. After receiving a public school education at Balsam Grove school, he was apprenticed to the shoe-making trade at which he worked for about 40 years all too faithfully and all too long for the good of his health. Failing health compelled him to leave the bench, that slow and insidious disease anemia, developed and gradually but surely sapped his strength until he fell asleep to wake no more in this world. His sorrowing widow, five children, two grandchildren, his aged mother three brothers and five sisters mourn his early demise.

The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Elmira Union Cemetery Service in St. Paul's Church after burial.

Geo, Schierholtz began business on his own account in 1886 in a small shop at the southern end of the village. Said shop was formerly owned and occupied by Mr. Schierholtz's father-in- law, Mr. Aug. Blatz, who by close attention to business and honest dealing had built up a good business in custom work. In 1887 Mr.Schierholtz bought shop of his own, east of Dunke's block and started to keep ready-made boots and shoes. He made it a point. to keep good serviceable stock and sell at a moderate profit. At the beginning of 1897 he took his brother Charles into partnership and they bought out the business of Mr. Schell and moved into the latter's shop next door to Uttley's former stand where they are still doing business. Their business has steadily increased and they look forward to a successful year in 1898. For good and neat repairing and custom work this place is noted far around. They some time ago got the local agency for the celebrated Slater shoes and can now supply the most fastidious with neat and nobby footwear.

    August Schierholtz

At the age of 15, August enrolled at the Berlin Business College and after a couple of years entered the Canadian Horological Institute (CHI), a Toronto watchmaking school that would gain worldwide attention as one of the finest institutions of its kind. With his inherent technical ability, he easily adapted to the school's curriculum and it wasn't long before he was tutoring other students in his class. At the end of his tenure, he graduated from the school with honours

After graduation from the CHI, he returned home and worked at his great uncle's (George Klinck) jewellery store in Elmira. In early 1913, August decided to accept a position with Westclox in LaSalle, Illinois and on March 4, 1913, started his new position in the Westclox Experimental Department, a division dedicated to developing new products and improving old ones.

When World War One broke out, August joined the American forces and was sent to France. On November 10, 1918, one day before the war ended, he was shot in the right leg and presumed dead. Without medical attention for several days, gangrene set into his wound and he subsequently had to have his leg amputated. He spent well over a year in France convalescing.

He returned to work at Westclox in 1920, resumed employment in the Experimental Department and seven years later was issued a patent for Big Ben Clock # 2, along with co-worker Max Schlenker.

August remained at Wesclox his entire working life and became a member of the Westclox Quarter Century Club in 1938. By the time he retired in 1954, he had risen in the ranks to a position as supervisor. During his final years he also served as an instructor in the Westclox Watch and Clock Makers' School.

Upon his retirement, August returned to Elmira where he lived with his mother until her death in 1962. August's own long and interesting life came to an end on September 28, 1984 at the Elmira Nursing Home. He had turned 96 earlier that month.
