WENGER - On the 5th of January 1896, at the home of her oldest son, Deacon J.Z. Kolb, near Berlin, Ont., of the infirmities of old age, Sister Elizabeth, wife of Bro. Jonas Wenger, aged 84 years, 5 days. Sister Wenger was born in the 31st of December 1811 near Skippack, Montgomery Co., Pa., and in the year 1816 she emigrated with her parents, Bro. and Sister Dilman and Kate (Schwartz) Ziegler to the then wilds of Upper Canada. On the 2nd of Nov. 1829 she was united in matrimony to Bro. Abraham Kolb who died in 1874. This union was blessed with four sons and three daughters, all of whom except one son are still living. In 1881 she was married to Bro. Jonas Wenger, who now survives her. She also leaves 44 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Sister Wenger was a devoted Christian and a faithful, zealous worker in the Mennonite church since her youth. She saw our congregations in Canada grow from their organization to the present time and always took deep interest in religious work. In homes where sickness and sorrow prevailed she was ever ready to render substantial aid and administer comfort, and when death came to her at last, after a long and busy life, she passed away peacefully and quietly, gathered as the shock of grain, fully ripened, into the heavenly Master's garner. Her remains were laid to rest on the 8th in the C. Eby cemetery, Berlin. Funeral services by Elias Weber at the house and by Noah Stauffer and Isaac Wambold at the meeting house.

    An Excuse.

As I see my name enrolled in the Conviction List for the charge of assault and battery I will endeavor to lay before the Public the nature of the charge, and let the People judge for themselves. We have a set of unruly Children in this place; fighting, playing ball, hollering and screaming, running up and down the Streets was carried on at such a rate that a person could hardly go the streets peaceable. I would frequently talk to them and also tell their parents it seemed to have no effect whatever. What shall we do, shall we go to law in such a case, I am sure we have plenty of that in Berlin; no, I took the liberty to give them a good whipping, and the reason I done so, was, because my own was with the lot - Now if this is just and that a man shall be charged for assault and battery, in such a case I will say no more; but I shall always say, and maintain, that I had done right, if we go to law with our Children in such a case. It is very easy to judge what the consequence will be, but we have so much law in this place that they will send a crazy man to Jail for taking up an Ax, yes and cuff his ears besides.

    B. H. Ziegler,
Carriage and Waggon Maker, King Street East - In reviewing the commercial and manufacturing industries of Berlin the fact is brought to light that there are many business houses that had been founded by the early settlers still in existence. Among the number and worthy of special notice is that of Mr. B.H. Ziegler, carriage manufacturer, of King Street East. This business was established over thirty-five years ago by Mr. E. Ziegler, father of the present proprietor, who conducted the same successfully for twenty years, and then his son having arrived at manhood's years, the father turned it over to him, although Mr. E. Ziegler is still actively engaged in the work. Mr. E. Ziegler has resided in Berlin over forty years, and was one of the first councillors when the place was incorporated as a village. He has also served on the School Board, and was at one time a Dominion License Commissioner. He is a gentleman highly honoured in the community for his many excellent qualities of head and heart. Mr. B.H. Ziegler, who has now conducted the business for the past fifteen years, makes all kinds of carriages, buggies, sleighs, wagons, carts and everything that comes under the head of carriage or wagon building. The premises occupied by him for the works are 30x50 feet in dimensions and two stories in height, where he gives employment to eight skilled workmen. Mr. Ziegler manufactures the carriage in its entirety, from iron and wood in the rough to the finished article. His trade extends throughout the Province of Ontario, and has been of late, and is, unexceptionally good. Mr. Ziegler is a practical workman, understanding every detail of his business and personally inspecting all work done in his establishment, thus guaranteeing to customers the utmost satisfaction.

A brick building, one story and a half, lengthwise with King Street, occupied by Yost Stroh as shoemaker shop and dwelling. Later this was made into a two story building.

    Next an open space,

A two story frame building, crowned with a bell tower, with a boiler house and engine in the rear. The bell is said to have been cracked on a New Year's night by too violent ringing. In any event its sound was impaired. The building as a factory was at one time operated by Cornell & Bowman. It changed tenants from time to time and occasionally was idle. In 1867 Henry Strieker used it as a woolen mill and William Simpson used it at one time. The building was unpainted. It was eventually destroyed by fire.

Another factory building with gable toward King Street and a one story veranda in front.

A two story brick dwelling, well back from the street, occupied by A. H. Mowat, general agent and Deputy Clerk, He was the father of Jim Mowat, known as Moses Oates and, as a weather prophet, active on the Toronto Globe for some years. Jim Mowat was a school mate of Jacob Stroh at the Central School. He published almanacs and was known throughout the province.

    FRIED & SON.

A short walk west of the village brought me to the fine two-hundred- acre stock farm of the above well known firm. I was induced to visit this place by the flattering reports of the large herd of splendid thoroughbred and grade Durham cattle kept and bred there and the numerous prizes awarded them in the face of competition with some of the leading thorough bred stock breeders in this country and the United States. Mr. Fried lives on the old homestead, where he was born, and has lived ever since. His son, Allen, lives on the adjoining farm formerly owned by the late Joseph Evans, once an old and familiar character in this neighborhood. The late Samuel Fried, father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Bucks County, Pa, Aug. 5, 1804. In March, 1825, he, in company with others, walked to Canada, the trip requiring thirteen days. He settled on a farm near Blair, which is now a part of the old Wilkes' estate. He removed, however, in a few years, to Blenheim township, Oxford county, and settled on the farm now occupied by the son, and where he died, Nov. 3, 1876. The old barn is still in a good state of preservation. I am informed from reliable authority that it is the oldest bank barn in Blenheim township. It was erected during the dark days of the rebellion in 1837 and a thrilling incident is connected with its construction. One of the workmen put up a small American flag upon the comb of the frame. It was an act that meant trouble for the perpetrator, but it suddenly and mysteriously disappeared when several British officers came in search of the objectionable emblem.

Messrs. Fried & Son have been in the cattle breeding business for quite a number of years, and there are none in Ontario who have been more successful. For an admirer of splendid specimens of the bovine family, it is a delightful and instructive pastime to visit their stables. While they have a large number, and not an inferior one in the lot, I will merely allow space to mention several of their specialties and prize winners:

Blenheim Cherry (21,756) calved Jan. 5th, 1892, on the Fried farm, is a mountain of hide and tallow, weighing nearly 2,100 pounds. She was the winner of the prize at the Provincial Fat Stock Show at Brantford, and 1st prize at the Oxford F. S. S., Ingersoll, 1897.

Oxford Rose (2,826), a most superb animal. She was easily awarded 1st prize at the Guelph Fat Stock Show as a two-year-old heifer, and Jubilee Sweepstakes, 1897. She tips the beam at 1,800 pounds.

Roan Lilly, a remarkably handsome creature was the winner of first prize at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, Brantford, 1897, and 1st prize at the Oxford Fat Stock Show, Ingersoll, 1897.

Snow Flake, pure white, and as perfect in shape and form as an animal could be, is going on two years. She weighs 1,500 pounds, and carried off 1st prize at the Provincial F. S. S, Brantford, 1897, and 1st prize at the Oxford Fat Stock Show, Ingersoll, 1897. She has thirteen 1st prizes to her credit. Carry, also a perfect beauty, won 2nd prize as a calf at the Guelph F.S.S, 1897.

Look Me Over won 1st prize as a two year-old grade steer at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, Brantford, 1897, and as a best steer, any age, and first Special Challenge Cup at Ingersoll, 1897. This animal weighed 1,900, and at Brantford the Champion Fat Steer of the United States was beaten by him.

That Mr. Fried is thoroughly experienced in feeding for the market, there is ample proof in the rapid increase in flesh made by "Look-Me-Over." His weight on Jan. 1st was 1,030 pounds, and by the following December he had gained 870 pounds.

Honest Billy, a prize winner from the ground up, won first premium at the Provincial Fat Stock Show, as a calf under one year old, and first prize at Oxford, I.S.S., Ingersoll, 1897, as a year-old. Weight, 1,200 pounds.

Were I to take the space to describe properly each animal, in the large herd of grades and thoroughbreds now being fed and cared for at the three barns of Messrs. Fried & Son, it would monopolize the entire edition of The CHRONICLE On the lower farm occupied by the son Allen, is a herd well worth the time to go and see. One thing in particular that attracted my attention on this occasion was the stable of splendid large horses in the finest condition. Nine cases out of ten where the breeding of thorough bred cattle is the leading feature, you will find the neglected horse stable sadly neglected.

    ______________________________

Jacob Zeigler was the eldest son of Abraham and Elizabeth Kolb, and was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., April 12, 1832, about two miles cast of Berlin (now Kitchener). On July 5, 1857, he was united in marriage to Maria, daughter of Elias and Maria (Polly Clemmens) Bowman. To this union were born seven children; Leah, Abram, Elias, Polly (deceased), Simon (deceased), Aaron, and Titus.

He united with the Mennonite Church in early youth, and was a devoted member throughout his long life, being interested and active in all of the work of the Church. In 1875 he was ordained to the office of deacon, in which capacity be served faithfully so long as health and strength permitted. He was a strong supporter and faithful worker in the early Sunday school activities of the Church, having been one of the organizers of the first permanent Sunday schools among our people in Waterloo county. For many years he was the superintendent of the Breslau Mennonite Sunday school. At a time when the Church's attitude toward special and continued efforts for the ingathering of the young people and others was undecided, Brother Kolb was among those who were strongly in favor of such work. Through the encouragement of such brethren efforts were put forth which resulted in a large addition to the active membership of the church. In the following years of increased activities in the Church in behalf of the Sunday schools, Young people's meetings and mission work, Brother Kolb manifested the greatest interest and gave his heartiest support and encouragement.

A number of years ago Bro. Kolb was afflicted with a stroke of paralysis which partly disabled him and from which he never entirely recovered. However, he continued his work in the Church and in his home life until a few years ago when growing infirmity of mind and body, due to recurrent attacks of paralysis, rendered him unable to continue his wonted activities. He keenly realized the weakening of his powers and expressed regret that he was no longer able to take up the duties of his work in the Church, but was always ready to express his joy in the service of the Master and give testimony of his hope in the Lord and in His promises. His strength gradually failed until on June 3, 1919, at the home of his son-in-law, Bro. Moses B. Betzner, where he and his companion had made their home, he calmly fell asleep. He reached the ripe old age of 87 y. 1 m. 21 d.

He lived in matrimony for nearly 62 years, and his aged companion, with four sons and one daughter and twelve grandchildren survive. Besides these children there were two adopted boys, John Zeigler and John Carcy, and two adopted girls, Fannie (Beasley) Pender and Allie (Stengle) Cutter, who with the rest of the family mourn the loss of one who was as a faithful, loving father to them. Brother Kolb is also survived by an aged brother, Menno S. Kolb of Wetaskewin, Alberta, and two aged sisters, Mrs. Nancy Kolb Shantz of Kitchener, Ont., and Mrs. Mary Ann Hoffman of Avondale, Mich. Funeral services were held on the 8th of June. Brother Samuel Bowman conducted the services at the home. At the church at Kitchener, where interment was made, the services were conducted by the Brethren, Jonas Snyder and S. F. Coffman. Texts, Psa. 39: 4; Heb. 4: 9. A large assembly of people testified of the esteem in which the aged servant of the Lord was held and of the sympathy extended toward the bereaved family. Another life has ended on earth and awaits the revelation of the sons of God at the day of the Lord.

    B. H. Ziegler, Carriage and Waggon Maker, King Street East - In reviewing the commercial and manufacturing industries of Berlin the fact is brought to light that there are many business houses that had been founded by the early settlers still in existence.

Elizabeth Ziegler, daughter of Enoch Ziegler and Hannah Hallman, received her teaching certificate from the Toronto Normal School at the age of sixteen, and at that time was the youngest student to receive a certificate. It was signed by Dr. Egerton Ryerson, Ontario's first Minister of Education. She taught for fifty-eight years, one year in Breslau, two years in Bloomingdale and in Waterloo for fifty-five years in both Central School and later as principal of Alexandra School.

Premier G.S. Henry presided when the Elizabeth Ziegler School, Moore Avenue, Waterloo, was opened and named in honor of her on September 2, 1931. Mr. Henry said in part:

"This splendid building is a monument to the purpose, integrity and inspiration of a woman who has helped fashion the lives of the citizens of this community and has helped them to make the best use of their lives."

Ziegler was a vocalist of note for many years and was a church choir leader. She retired in 1930 and died in 1942.

It may be of interest to some of the older generation to read the names of local citizens of talent appearing in the concert programs of that era. In the eighties we find the following: Misses Weaver, Devitt, Fielding, Lamonte, Sherk, Boehmer, Harrison, Mrs. M. B. Clemens, and Messrs. H. Devitt, Noah Zeller (clarionette), Henry Hymmen, A. Breithaupt, J. Appel, PL Reinhardt, R. Chamberlain. Miss Amy Jaffray, a local soprano with considerable vocal training under Toronto teachers, sang on June 28th, 1888, in an "Academy Concert" in the Town Hall, under the direction of Theo Zoellner. Coming down into the nineties, we find Mr. Zoellner's two talented daughters, Margaret (violinist) and Emma (piano, voice, harp, flautist, xylophone), appearing with increasing frequency on his programs. Vocally, other participants were Misses Clara Specker, C. Riener, and Messrs. C. Riener, J. Hensius, Julius Zeller (flautist), Charles Ruby; as organist, Miss Anna Bean, and pianist, Miss Emma Specker. Of professional rank, two sopranos of more than local reputation took part on separate occasions in Mr. Zoellner's production of the Oratorios, namely our home born artists, the late Mrs. A. T. Boles (Detta Ziegler) and Mrs. A. B. Pollock (Racie Boehmer). Both studied in Toronto and later finished under New York teachers.
