- Galt and Doon Men Enrolled on the Honor List
Latest Casualty List Shows Three Men from Galt Among The Killed. One From Doon.
Galt, Oct. 26. Three Galt young men and a Doon man who enlisted here were to-day reported killed in action on October 13. One of the men, Corp. Geo. C. Potts, was with the 1st Battalion, and the other three were all members of the 34th Battalion's first special detail company which went to France in August.
Corp. George C. Potts, of the 1st Battalion, was 22 years of age, born in Staffordshire, Eng. He had been in Galt three years, and worked at the Getty & Scott shoe factory. He was an expert swimmer and had won a number of medals and other prizes. He recovered the body of a child drowned in the river here a year or so ago. His mother. Mrs. Mary Potts, lives at 181 St. Andrew's street, and she has two other sons serving with the Canadian contingents. James with the 34th Bat-talion and John with the 71st, now at London.
Ptes. Archibald Crawford and David Bain, the other two Galt young men, were pals, and had been together continuously since they left Galt with the 34th Battalion, and evidently gave their lives together. Pte. Crawford was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Crawford, Elliott street, and was in his 21st. year. He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, and had been six years in Galt. He was very well known, and had played with the Trinity and Caledonian football teams, and was a member of the Galt Cricket Club. He was also a member of the Central Church choir. Besides his parents, two sisters survive.
Pte. Bain was a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Bain, 43 Cedar street, and was in his 23rd year, born in Clackmannanshire, Scotland, and had been in Canada six years, three in Galt. He had been employed at the Goldie & McCulloch works, and played football with the Caledonian team. Besides his parents, three brothers and three sisters survive.
The Doon man reported killed is Pte. Albert Foote, who enlisted at Galt, and who had a number of relatives here. He is a brother-in-law of Armory Sergt. Coredeck, of the 29th Regiment. Pte. Foote was also a member of the 34th Battalion special service company. He was 28 years of age, and was born in London Eng., and had been eight years in Canada, all of which he spent in Doon, and previous to enlisting had been employed at the Car and Coach works, Preston. Besides his widow and two children, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. James Foote, John Street, this city, and four sisters in Galt and two brothers, William, with the 5th Montreal Highlanders, now in France and Harold Foote, formerly of Galt, and now in training with the 71st Battalion at London.
