Notes |
- In 1947, Barney Strassburger took over a small eatery called the Ontario Steak House on Highway 8, renting it for a dollar a day from a man who worked for Clare's foundry in Preston. Beginning with six tables and six stools, Barney built up a brisk demand for his specialty of tenderloin steak on a bun for 25 cents and 10 cent coffee, and was able to triple capacity in 1950. In 1952 he moved to the Highway 7 strip east of Kitchener, buying the Silver Slipper, an entertainment place attached to the Silver Cabins. He and his wife lived above the business and built up the dancing (to a jukebox) and catering. As it was impossible to get a liquor licence, customers continued to bring their own and buy ice and ginger ale from the house; Waterloo Township police alternately turned a blind eye and raided the place.
