  Charles W. J. Merkel By Record Correspondent HESPELER, May 14. Charles W. J. Merkel, 78, native of Preston and resident of Hespeler for the past 12 years, died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilhelmina Mast, here yesterday after a lengthy illness. Born in Preston, the late Mr. Merkel resided in Listowel during his early married life. From 1902 he resided in Hamilton for many years; for a short time in London and later in Preston, until making his home in Hespeler 12 years ago. Deceased was a cigar maker by trade. He was a member of Preston Cambridge I.O.O.F. Lodge. In 1895 he married Anna Wirsching, who predeceased him in 1901. Three children were born of the marriage, two sons, Norman E. of Hamilton and Wilfred of Bella Coola, B.C., who survive, and a daughter, Vera, who died in 1930. In 1902 he married Elizabeth Wirsching who predeceased him in 1940. Rev. George Kersey of Hespeler United Church will officiate at the funeral service. The body is resting at the Stager-Pass Ltd., Funeral Home, Preston, from where the funeral will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. Interment will be in the Preston cemetery.
