Notes |
- TUFFORD, CHARLES DUNCOMBE was born on the Governor's Road, two miles east of Paris. He was the eldest son of Mrs. Tufford of Paris Station.
He graduated from the University of Victoria College in 1857 and in 1857-8 practised in Villa Nova. By 1866 he was in St Thomas, practising as a homeopathic physician, and he was largely responsible for the inclusion of homeopaths on the staff of Victoria Hospital, London.
He was said to have practised at Burford and Brantford. The Galt Reporter on May 13, 1870 said he had bought the North American Hotel, Preston. On April 12, 1871 a notice was inserted in the Dumfries Reformer:
Preston Baths and Medico-Hygienic Institute:
The above Institution having been lately improved and enlarged, and put more thoroughly upon a sanitary basis than heretofore, will from this date be open for the reception of Invalids and Guests during the whole of the year. A kind and experienced female Nurse will be in attendance. For warm Baths will be charged 35 cents each; for Cold do. 25 cents. Bathing Tickets for the summer can be obtained for $7.50 each, or $10. 00 when an attendant is required.
C. D. Tufford
Proprietor and Resident Physician
The Reformer was pleased, as they commented on April 15th.:
Preston Baths and Hygienic Institute We are pleased to see that Dr. Tufford has made many improvements at the Preston Baths. He has changed the Hotel into a Hygienic Institute, improving the Bath-House and intends to erect a Gymnasium, which together with new regulations, will make the place more popular than ever with the public.
In the census of 1871 he was aged 38, born in Ontario, his wife was Elizabeth and they had four children.
On November 29, 1871 the Reformer noted he was practising in London.
A letter from the Archives of the American Medical Association dated December 10, 1873 lists him in Champaign, Ill. in 1886 and in Pomona, California in 1890. He died in Los Angeles where he had been practising on July 31. 1896.
