New Hamburg Youth Dies While Working
A 17-year-old New Hamburg youth died accidentally Saturday when his neck caught in a loop of baling twine hanging from a ceiling in a basement where he was working.
Dead is Dale Peter Baechler, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Baechler. 334 Peel St. He was a Grade 12 student at Waterloo-Oxford secondary school
The youth had been piling firewood in the basement of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Licht's farmhome, RR1 New Hamburg where he worked part-time.
Because of his height, six feet, two inches, a cold air duct had been removed from the ceiling to allow the youth head room. A loop of baling twine, used to hold the duct hung loosely.
The youth is believed to have stumbled with a load of wood, catching his neck in the loop.
Minutes before the accident, Mrs. Lichti had given him a glass of milk which he drank in the kitchen. Two Lichti children had been helping the youth, but left to watch television.
When Mrs. Lichti heard no noise coming from the basement where the youth worked, she investigated. She found the body and then rushed to a neighboring farm where her husband was working.
The body was taken to K-W Hospital Sunday for a pathology examination
Police said there will be no inquest.
Born in South Easthope Township, he lived in New Hamburg for the past seven years He was a member of Hillcrest Mennonite Church.
Surviving, besides his parents are two brothers, Glen of RR 2. New Hamburg, and Ronald of New Hamburg; two sisters. Carolyn and Brenda, both at home, and his maternal grandmother. Mrs Christian Yantzi of Tavistock. His mother was the former Anna Yantzi.
The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home until noon Wednesday Funeral services will be held at the East Zorra Mennonite Church, 17th line, at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Henry Yantzi will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
