FORMER NEW RICHLAND CITIZEN DIES AT FARIBO

DAVID F. BETTSCHEN WAS AMONG EARLY SETTLERS OF BERLIN TOWNSHIP

Funeral services were conducted at Faribault last Saturday over the remains of David F. Bettschen who passed away at the home of his son, Dr. and Mrs. W. F. Bettschen on Thursday afternoon, February 28, at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 17 days,

"Uncle Dave" as he was known by his many friends, was, a disciple of the great-out-doors was an enthusiastic sportsman and a large part of the four years he spent in New Richland was taken up with hunting and fishing. It was his love for these sports that prompted both he and Mrs. Bettschen to take up their cottage at one of the Faribault lakes teach summer. The following obituary of his life appeared in the Faribault Journal: Mr. Bettschen was born November 11, 1842, of Swiss parentage, at Wilmot, Ont., Dominion of Canada.

When only a few months of age he accompanied his parents to McHenry county, Illinois, where he grew to young manhood. During the Civil War Mr. Bettschen enlisted from this place with the Chicago Board of Trade Battery, with which he served until the end of the war.

In 1865 he received his discharge from the army, being demobilized at Chicago. About a year previous to this time his fiancee, Mary Ellen Farnsworth had gone to Steele county,Minnesota, where she had negotiated the purchase of a quarter section of land in Berlin township, in anticipation of his release from the army and the fruition of their plans to establish a home. To this place Mr. Bettschen repaired immediately after his discharge and the union took place in August of the same year. Here the three children were born, of whom the only survivor is Dr. W. F. Bettschen of this city. (Mrs. W. B. Steele, one of the sisters, died in 1906, and her sister, Mrs. G. L. Gordon, followed, in 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Bettschen moved from the farm to Ellendale, then a newly established village, in 1902. At the same place their son had set up an office for the practice of dentistry and when he later removed to New Richland in the adjoining county of Waseca, they followed and were residents of that place from 1907 to 1911. From here they moved to Waterville, and after a year's residence at that place came to Faribault, which has been their home since, the winters being spent in the city and the summers at their cottage at Cannon Lake.

Besides his wife and son residing in Faribault, he is survived by fifteen grandchildren.
