- KRAUEL, David Paul November 20, 1944 - September 28, 2012 It is with deep sorrow that we announce David's passing. With his family by his side, David slipped away peacefully at home, after a brave and stoic 15 year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, followed by an 18 month battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and subsequently Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Predeceased by his loving wife, Jill (November 26, 2010), of 41 years, David leaves behind to mourn, his daughters Sara (Shane) and Val, his beloved grandchildren Ava and Zachary, sisters Heather (David) and Heidi (Peter), brothers Trent, Kevin (Jayne) and Blair, brother in law Hugh (Barbara), nieces Meghan (Shane), Erin (Ben), Lindsay (Rick), and Alex, nephews Jason, Blaine (Josie), James (Jorunn), Charles (Monika) and AJ (Mel), great-nieces Megan and Alyssa, great-nephew Andrew, and many close friends. Born in Waterloo, Ontario, to Joye and Paul Krauel, David met Jill while working on his master's degree in Halifax. Married in 1969, David and Jill spent three years in Liverpool while David completed his PhD in Physical Oceanography. Returning to Canada in 1972, they settled first in Halifax, before moving to Victoria in 1974, where they raised their family. David spent 21 years with Royal Roads Military College, starting as a professor of Physics and Oceanography, and ending as Dean of Graduate Studies. David continued on with Royal Roads University, as Director of Information Systems, until his retirement in 2002. David was passionate about boating and enjoyed many years racing sailboats, and spent many summers with Jill cruising and exploring the islands. David was committed to his involvement with the Juan de Fuca Power Squadron, where he met and fostered many close friendships. We will all miss his gentle ways, but most of all his witty sense of humour. The family would like to thank Linda Foster, David's community health nurse, Jill and Carole the nurses from the Palliative Response Team, along with Kari and Caelin the counsellors from the Palliative Response Team, who supported us through David's final hours, the nurses on 4A South at VGH for taking such good care of David during his many transfusions, the nurses on 4B South who took care of David during his final hospital stay, Dr. Dereck Smith, the family's physician for his support and guidance, Dr. Adrian Yee and all the nurses at the BC Cancer Clinic for the wonderful care that he received during his treatments, Dr. Hillary Wass and Dr Tom Nevill for their support and innovative treatments throughout the years. At David's request, there will be no service. A celebration of David's life will be held in the near future. Please contact the family for information. In lieu of flowers, the family's wishes are to have donations made to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation in David's memory.
