David S. Gemmell Fractured Skull in Fall from Hay Mow

As the result of an accident, the death, occurred in the Hospital, where he contracted pneumonia and passed away on Saturday, of David Smith Gemmell, North Dumfries, in his 67th year. The accident, which was responsible for Mr. Gemmell's untimely death, occurred the previous Monday morning. A threshing outfit, in charge of Alex Kuntz and John Hallman, had pulled into the Gemmell barn and was setting up in preparation for threshing. Mr. Gemmell entered the barn and climbed to a hay mow, a distance of some 20 feet off the barn floor. In some manner he lost his balance and fell to the floor, striking the top of his head on the threshing separator on the way down, fracturing his skull. The accident went unnoticed by Messrs. Kuntz and Hallman who were working about the machine, and the fatally injured man was found a short time later by his brother John, who resided with him on the farm. An ambulance was summoned and he was rushed to Galt Hospital. The late Mr. Gemmell was a successful farmer, his property comprising some 400 acres of land. He was well known and popular among the people of this district and, in his passing, the community suffers a distinct loss. A son of the late John Gemmell and Mary Myers, the deceased was born on the Gemmell homestead, upon which he resided during all of his lifetime. He was an adherent of Knox United church. Unmarried, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. James Welsh, North Dumfries; a half-sister, Miss Jessie, of Ayr, and a half-brother, John, at home.
