- Donald S. Watson Passes
A well-known former Ayr resident, Donald Stevenson Watson of Markdale passed away in Markdale Hospital on Thursday. The late Mr. Watson, who was in his 59th year, had been in ill health for some time. He was born in Winnipeg, a son of the late Archie G. Watson and Margaret Stevenson Watson. He came to Ayr as a small child when his father was moved to the head office of the John Watson Mfg. Co. Ltd. plant here. He received his education here and was subsequently employed by the Watson firm for many years. During World War II Mr. Watson served overseas with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Mr. Watson was a popular figure here in social and fraternal circles. He was a valued member and a past master of Ayr Masonic Lodge. He also was active in the Ayr Tennis Club as well as other local organizations. In Markdale Mr. Watson was associated for a number of years with the Rotary Club. He left Ayr in 1947 to become a principal in a woodworking firm in Paisley. He later entered the insurance business and operated a successful agency in Markdale until his passing. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Kathleen Faus of Ayr, are a daughter, Jane, at home; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Cockburn (Emily) of Drumbo and Mrs. Arthur Whitelaw (Margaret) of North Port Charlotte, Florida, and a brother, David Watson of Peterborough. Funeral service was held in Markdale on Monday, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.
