Hespeler Woman Marks 90th Birthday Jan 1
By Record Staff Writer
HESPELER: As the clock strikes midnight tomorrow night Mrs. Arnettie Dickie will be 90 years old.
A resident of Hespeler since 1896, she is a cheerful, busy lit the woman, who says people have changed little during her lifetime.
"Customs, dress and the comforts of life have changed, but people continue to have about the same ratio of faults and virtues as they ever had." she said.
LIVED IN BRANTFORD
She is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Urias Willson, and was born at Jerseyville near Linden. Before coming to Hespeler she lived in Brantford.
Mrs. Dickie worked at the woollen mills here for 20 years, retiring in 1923.
Today's working hours amuse her. When she worked at the mill the day started at 6:25 am and finished at 6:15 p.m. -5½ days a week.
Hespeler had electricity then but the power was turned off at 11 p.m.
ATTENDS BIBLE CLASS
"It didn't matter much to most people. After working 12 hours a day most of us were in bed long before 11 o'clock," she said.
The only surviving member of her family is a brother Charles Willson, who lives with her.
Mrs. Dickie, attends Preston Baptist Church and is a member of the Adult Bible Class.
