  • Notes
    • WELLS, FRANCIS HARTMAN was born in York County in 1870 and died at Port Elgin on August 8, 1945, There is little information about his early career.

He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1891, and according to the obituary in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, of November 1945, he started to practice in Conestoga.

A biographical sketch in the Port Elgin Centennial publication said he was too young (21) upon graduation to practise in Ontario. This account said his early medical career was spent in Tonawanda, New York, and Lansing Michigan. This may have been a period of postgraduate work as he was in Conestoga in 1893, and possibly earlier.

He left Conestoga at the end of 1893, or early in 1894, for Markdale, and from there he went to Port Elgin in 1896.

His Conestoga practice was taken over by Dr. Grant, and the papers were more concerned with Grant's arrival than Well's departure.

In Port Elgin he had a flourishing practice, and served as Medical Officer of Health. He died on August 8, 1945, survived by his widow, two daughters and a son.
