Notes |
- CARSON, GEORGE ALVA (ALLAN) was born February 13. 1822 in Prince Edward County, the son of a U. E. L. family. His educational history is obscure - one source says he "began his studies in the common schools, but is practically a self-educated man."(1) In 1852 he graduated from Central Medical College, Rochester, N. Y, and in June that year began to practice in Galt. At some time he attended McGill University, and in 1858 obtained his medical degree from Victoria University. He was not registered by the Ontario College until 1866.
His introduction to Galt was by a typical eclectic notice:
DR CARSON
Respectfully announces to the Public of the County of Waterloo and surrounding country that he has
OPENED A MEDICAL OFFICE
in the town of Galt, second door west of the Bridge leading from Main Street where he will at all times be happy to attend to the calls of those afflicted with disease, either Acute or Chronic, and render them the most speedy Relief.
From the experience of several years practice, and the success Dr. Carson has had, with the addition of all the Remedies of one of the best Medical Reform Colleges in the United States (of which Dr. C. is a Graduate) he feels safe in saying that his method of treating Diseases of the Lungs, Liver, Kidneys, Spine, Nerves and all Female Complaints cannot be surpassed by any in the country.
He would also say he has obtained a thorough knowledge of the German Method of Practice, by which he arrives at a correct diagnosis in all Chronic cases and will prescribe the medicines accordingly. To those unacquainted with this system of Practice he would say, he examines the Urine to tell the disease, it should be brought in a clean vial holding from 2 to 3 ounces, the first in the morning is preferred. The name and age of the Patient are requested. No charge is made for examination or advice, medicines for Chronic diseases are principally from the Vegetable Kingdom.
To those afflicted with disease of the Eye, Cancers or Fever Sores Dr. C. warrants a cure or no pay.
All diseases of a private nature kept in profound secrecy.
All calls attended to in Town or Country.(2)
In 1853 a card informed readers that he and James A. Whiting, an eclectic physician of Berlin, had formed a partnership in Galt.(3) Although later they inserted a notice in the name of the partnership, dated-1858, and giving their address as Greenbush, Berlin,(4), Whiting had announced by 1854 that he had returned to Berlin to practice.(5). Whiting's action probably indicated a breakup of the partnership, at least temporarily during Carson's absence from Galt.
In June 1855 an account of a wedding refers to Carson as "late of Galt". He is listed in Brampton in 1857-8,(6) - he probably was there earlier; another source, questionably, states that he practised in Whitby from 1856 (7), Any time he spent in Berlin with Whiting must have been brief. As a matter of interest, Whiting's infant son, born in May, 1856, was christened "George Alvey" - possibly after Carson.
His final move was to 'Whitby where he resided until his death on March 13, 1910. He served on the town council, was coroner, surgeon to the Grand Trunk Railway, and a member of Council of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons.
A comment in a biographical sketch showed that he retained an interest, financial at least, in the eclectic medicine of his early days:
"His name is familiar to the public as the inventor and manufacturer of patent medicines, notably amongst these is his "Liver Tonic and Blood Purifier," which is now probably one of the best and most widely known remedies on this continent."(8)
