- GOWING, George Bruce Passed into the presence of the Lord at Fairview Mennonite Home on Monday, August 2, 2010 in his 92nd year. Bruce was born in Preston on May 6, 1919 and lived there all of his life. He was the son of the late Irene and Wesley Gowing. His wife, Kathryn Mary Bechthold pre- deceased him in 2002, also his brothers Robert and Frank and his sister Ruth Dyck, brothers-in-law Edgar Dyck, Gordon Debus and sisters-in-law June Gowing and Ruth Gowing. He is survived by his sisters; Grace Gowing of Cambridge, Jean Bowey (Elmer) of Cambridge, Mary Debus of Waterloo, his brothers; Ralph Gowing of Owen Sound, Jack (Day) Gowing of Collingwood, Cliff Gowing (Joyce) of Kitchener and sister-in-law Jean Gowing of Cambridge. Also lovingly remembered by many nephews and nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and great-great-nephews and nieces. Bruce was employed by Grand River Lake Erie and Northern (C.P.R.) Railway for 42 years. In his retired years he was involved with Hackney Ponies and belonged to the Hackney Pony Association. Bruce was a faithful and acting member of the West Side Bible Chapel in Cambridge for most of his life, where he was involved in Sunday School, taking many children to and from Sunday School. Also, Bruce taught Sunday School for many years and was Treasurer of the Chapel for several years. Bruce played hockey for many of the local teams and also with the Guelph Junior A Team. He also received the Most Valuable Player Trophy. Bruce's family will receive friends at the Barthel Funeral Home (566 Queenston Road, Cambridge) on Thursday, August 5 between 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and between 1-2 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2010 at Fairview Mennonite Home (515 Langs Drive, Cambridge). Funeral Service to follow at Fairview Mennonite Home at 2 p.m. Interment New Hope Cemetery. In memory of Bruce, memorial donations to the Faith's Orphan Fund or Fairview Mennonite Home would be appreciated by the family.
