'Unprecedented' heritage project sees century-old slate roof replaced
CAMBRIDGE Pieces missing, leaking and faded by more than a century of sun that's how the slate roof of a 10-unit row housing structure on St. Andrew Street in Galt looked just a few months ago.
Thanks to an "unprecedented" undertaking requiring collaboration between the various owners, and a helping hand from heritage funds, the roof has been reborn....
Built in 1885 to house workers at a nearby mill, the 58 to 76 St. Andrew Street row house "known as St. Andrew's Terraces" was constructed at a cost of about $4,000. The money was put up by physician G.P. Sylvester and J.W. Ward, a local painter and real estate agent.
It was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1989, in part due to its designed slate roof, as well as red and yellow brick....

_____________
SYLVESTER, GEORGE PERRY was born on December 19, 1852, at Enniskillen, Durham County. His father was Squire Henry Sylvester a prominent citizen and justice of the peace, he married on Feb. 19, 1877 Charlotte Reid, in Bowmanville, their family consisted of four daughters. He died in Toronto on January 13, 1924, survived by his widow and daughters.
He attended the Bowmanville schools and entered Trinity University, Toronto, graduating as Gold Medallist in 1875.
He began to practice in Galt and was welcomed by the Dumfries Reformer of April 28, 1875:
Personal. We welcome to Galt Dr. G. P. Sylvester, late of Bowmanville, who comes to assume the practice resigned by Dr. Cowen who removes to Woodstock. Dr. Sylvester is a Gold Medallist of Trinity College and has had considerable experience in the Esculpanian art and has occupied the position of Assistant Clinical. Surgeon in the Toronto General Hospital and Assistant Surgeon in the Toronto Eye and Ear Infirmary. We think the doctor will be a valuable acquisition to the town.
In 1879 he formed a partnership with Dr. S. Richardson which was of short duration as Dr. Richardson died in 1882.
In 1881 he built a house opposite the Queen's Hotel, which was later the Y. M. C. A.
He opened a private hospital, according to the Dumfries Reformer of April 25, 1889.
PRIVATE HOSPITAL
Dr. Sylvester has completed arrangements and will open a Private Hospital on Pollock Ave. Galt, and will be prepared to receive patients on and after the first of May for the treatment of Diseases of Women and Deformities in Children.
A limited number of patients can be accomodated at present for the above treatment. Other cases may be admitted by a special arrangement. Every comfort and attention will be given them. Good nurses and moderate rates.
No further reference to this hospital has been found, but he had a particular interest in surgery and was in New York on a number of occasions attending postgraduate courses in this subject.
In 1890 he formed a partnership with Dr. Wardlaw for a short time.
In 1893 he decided to leave Galt, and a notice appeared in the Dumfries Reformer of December 8th.:
Dr. Sylvester, who has for the past 19 years so successfully carried on an extensive practice in Galt, has sold out to Dr. G. Acheson, M. A. M. B., son of Rev. Robert Acheson, a former pastor of the Galt U. P. church, and who has just lately moved back to town. Dr. Acheson takes possession at once and comes to town very highly recommended.
Dr. Sylvester will remain in Galt for some months yet, but it is his intention to move to some Canadian city and make a specialty of surgery. We are sure that the citizens at large will be sorry to hear of Dr. Sylvester1s intention and will wish him every success and prosperity wherever he may locate.
The next year he moved to Toronto where he built up an extensive practice. He was one of the leading surgeons on the staff of Grace Hospital.
He was forced by ill health to give up his practice in 1913. He and his wife travelled to Europe, and in 1916 went to China where he spent a year visiting his daughter. While there at the request of the French government he examined "coolies", 30, 000 of them according to the newspaper, to determine their suitability to be taken to France as laborers.
He was a member of the usual fraternal organizations, and an active supporter of the Conservative party. He was a member of the Granite Club, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, and the Lambton Golf and Country Club.
