Gordon Sutherland (Dal) Dalrymple, prominent in Ayr's business and social life for over half a century, passed away at Brantford General Hospital on Sunday April 11 1993. He was in his 92nd year. Born in North Dakota , he was a son of the late George Dalrymple and Esther Sutherland. Ile was employed as a young man by the CPR and arrived in Ayr in 1918 from London, assuming the position of assistant station agent. His pay at that time, he recalled in an Ayr News article was $45 a month for a 12 hour day, working usually seven days a week. In 1925 Dal married Hazel Cassady and shortly thereafter was transferred by CP to Guelph, then London and Thamesford before coming back to Ayr in 1927. In 1929 the Dalryinples purchased the former Methodist parsonage on Piper Street where they resided their entire married lives. Dal sold the home in 1987 and moved to Teller Place, Paris. As the Depression deepened in 1930, Dal found himself laid off from CPR. He did a number of odd jobs until 1931 when he established the Dalrymple Insurance business which continues to operate in Ayr today. As a sideline to the insurance business he drew up wills and handled estates, clerked auction sales and served as Ayr village clerk from 1946 to 1957. He sat on the board of Knox United Church for a number of years and was an Ayr Public School Board trustee from 1931 to 1946 a number of these years as secretary-treasurer. Dal was instrumental in helping organize the Ayr 150th anniversary celebrations in 1974 and served as committee treasurer. Sports played an important part in his life as did the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed playing hockey and later served as an executive member with both men's and minor teams in Ayr, having been a past president and life member of the Ayr Minor Hockey Association. He was one of the few members of Ayr Curling Club to be made a life member. He was among a group of guarantors who oversaw the building of the present curling club. Hunting and lawn bowling were also favorite pastimes. He served in several capacities with Ayr Masonic Lodge, which made him a life member, was district deputy grand master in 1949 and made a life member of the Grand Lodge of' Ontario. Residents of the village honoured Dal in 1980 when he was named Ayr's Citizen of the Year. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wile Hazel Cassady in 1986.
