CRESS, ROBERT
Mr. Robert S. Cress, age 74 years, of R.R.#5, Hwy. 17, Thunder Bay, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital February 1, 1998. He was born in Galt, Ontario June 12, 1923 to Samuel and Mary Cress. He lived his younger life on a farm in Blair, Ontario. He served in the army overseas in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and 2nd Division in Dieppe during WWII. Robert enlisted in 1942, leaving for England, France, Caen, Belgium, Holland and Germany, returning in January 1946. He then started to work for the Canadian National Railways in 1946 in Larson, Ontario. Later he moved to Conmee and Twin City Junction as Section Foreman. He married the former Lorna Case in 1954 and worked in Kelly, Kawene, Mabella and Kakabeka Falls. He lived at R.R.#5 Thunder Bay since 1969. Robert retired from the Canadian National Railways in 1985 after 39½ years of service. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #225 (Kakabeka Falls), Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees, the Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and C.N. Pensioners Association. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, camping, picking blueberries and fishing. He always planed a huge garden so he would have plenty to share with friends and neighbours. He is survived by his wife Lorna, who he celebrated 43 years of marriage with in April 1997; one son Dana, at home; daughter Lori and her husband Richard DePlonty of New Dundee, Ontario; grandchildren Andre DePlonty and Roberta Lynn DePlonty; one sister Mary Louise Bartlett of Kitchener, ON; two brothers Philip Cress (Jackie) of Cambridge, ON, and George Cress (Berneice) of Grand Bend, ON; sister-in-law Doris Cress of Ayr, Ontario; brother-in-law Ken Case (Irma) of Sault Ste. Marie, sister-in-law Dorthea Case of Elmira, ON; and nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his father Samuel Cress and mother Mary Cress of Blair, Ontario; brother Donald of Ayr, Ontario; three sisters Grace Baird, Kitchener, Jean Kargus (George) of Galt and Mildred Hannusch (Lorne) of Cambridge, ON; and aunts and uncles. Visitation will take place Tuesday evening from 6: 30-8: 30 p.m. in the chapel of the Jenkens Funeral Home. The Kakabeka Falls Royal Canadian Legion Branch #225 will hold a Legion Service at 1: 00 p.m. Family and friends will gather for funeral services at Jenkens Funeral Home on Wednesday February 4, 1998 at 1: 15 p.m. Interment in family plot at Stanley Hill Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses, Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Center, Red Cross Homemakers, or charity of choice would be appreciated.
