- MATHYSSEN, Gysbertus Hendricus
Passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010, at Stirling Heights LTCF, in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of the late Doris Mills (2002). Predeceased by his daughter, Sandra (1955), his first wife Janny (1955) and his brothers; Rick and Co. Survived by his sister, Joke Nooyens (Nellis) in the Netherlands, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his many good friends. Dick was born in Holland in 1919. He served as a medic in the Dutch Army during WWII. After escaping from a P.O.W. camp in 1940, he was active in the Dutch Resistance, which earned him the Dutch Medal of Freedom. In 1944 he joined the Canadian Forces operating under NATO Command. Dick immigrated to Canada in 1954. He was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 126, where he earned the highest award, The Palm Leaf, along with the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a long time member of First United Church and more recently a member of Trillium United Church. Dick was employed for many years by the Waterloo District School Board and loved coaching extracurricular sports. Sincere thanks go out to the wonderful, caring staff at Stirling Heights who encouraged Dick's unique sense of humour. A celebration of Dick's life will take place on Friday, September 17, 2010, at Lounsbury Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Boulevard in Cambridge, at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will precede the service, commencing at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Mount View Cemetery at a later date.
