Notes |
- Lamentable Accident in Galt - A very sad accident happened in Galt on Saturday afternoon last about half-past 5 o'clock, whereby a fine little son of our esteemed townsman, Mr. J.W. Edmand, lost his life. It appears that the little boy aged about 9 years, along with his younger sister was playing in the back garden attached to the house in which Mr. Edmand lives, which is only separated by a fence from the river. The water at this time was so high in the river that it was even with the garden, and it would appear that while playing, the two by some means got to a place where there was nothing to prevent them falling into the water. The little boy was the most venturesome, and getting very close to the edge, by some means he fell in and was of course borne rapidly away by the swift current. His little sister ran screaming to the house and gave the alarm, but nothing could be done. Parties passing over the bridge had a momentary glimpse of the poor little fellow as he went below it, and the alarm given aid was attempted and parties started down the river, but only one or two saw anything of the little fellow, and owing to the tremendous current they were unable to do anything towards a rescue. Just below Mr. Siddall's all trace was lost, and although an active search has been maintained ever since we are very sorry to say no trace of the body has been discovered. This poor little fellow was a general favorite in the town, and it is with the sincerest sorrow that their many friends tender to the bereaved parents their sympathy in their fearful loss. We have said that an active search has been going on ever since the accident, and that so far the efforts made have been unsuccessful. We are pleased to hear that the residents along the river are aiding those who are carrying on the search, and we would ask our friends between here and Glenmorris and below, now that the water is falling rapidly, to give a few minutes now and then to inspecting the banks of the river.
