  • Notes
    • ROBERTS, HUGH GRANT was born at Elora in 1854, a son of Hugh Roberts, a prominent pioneer settler, and Mary Grant, who taught in the first school in Elora. He attended the Pilkington public school and the Elora High School, and then taught school in the Paisley Block for about eight years, entering Trinity University, Toronto, he graduated with honors in 1885.

He first practised in New Germany, where he stayed until 1903. He married a local resident, Catherine Fromm, who died in April 1897.

He took a particular interest in the superstitions of the people of that area, and delivered an address on that topic before the county teacher's convention in 1902.

When he left New Germany the Daily Telegraph copied a report from the Guelph Herald:

Dr. Roberts of New Germany has sold his residence in that village and intends to remove to this city and continue the practice of his profession here. The doctor is an old Pilkington boy, and has a wide connection in this district. he has been practising in New Germany for many years. Dr. Roberts removal to Guelph will be gratifying to his many friends and to the friends of his estimable wife, who before her marriage was a resident of Guelph and enjoys much social popularity here.

In Guelph he built up a large practice and became a popular and well known practitioner, he was interested in sports, especially in lawn bowling.

He had a heart attack in February, 1922, and although he went to Clifton Springs in an effort to improve his health, he had a further attack and died on July 9, 1922. He was survived by his widow, the former Elizabeth Turnbull, of Galt, and three daughters.

The Guelph Evening Mercury said of him:

The passing of Dr. Roberts has not only cast a gloom over the medical fraternity of the city, with which he has been actively connected for the past 19 years, but also among his many acquaintances in Guelph and surrounding district, where he was very popularly known. Of a very jolly disposition, he made friends with everyone, and his death removes a citizen of the very finest type, who was beloved by all who knew him.
