Notes |
- Isabel Dryden was born in Galt (now Cambridge), Ontario to Andrew Dryden & Elizabeth Kennedy who were both born in Scotland. She was the youngest of 11 children. Her siblings were Maria (Lamb), Andrew Atchison, John Kennedy, Thomas Henry, Janet Cairns (Fulton), James Atchison, Elizabeth (Connolly), Annie (Cathrea), Agnes, & Robert Scott.
In 1885, she married Duncan Joseph Robertson & they had 3 children: William, Isabella, & Stuart. William died as an infant & Isabella died at age 8. Duncan soon separated from the family & died a few years later.
In 1901, while living in Toronto, she answered a request for a "mail order" bride from John Durand of Indus, MN. She came to Indus in 1904 & she & John were married. Her son Stuart came to Indus at age 12 & grew up there. Indus was Isabel's home for the rest of her life.
John & Isabel had built a large house on the Rainy River. After Stuart married Veta Peggar, the young family lived in the big house & John & Isabel lived in a small house across the road. Stuart & Veta had 6 children before Veta's early death. The children remember Isabel & John fondly as kind & helpful grandparents during their youth.
After John's death in 1942, Isabel was married to Charles Endicott for a few years before her death in 1948. She was buried near John in the Indus Cemetery.
