- SHANTZ, J. Ralph (1922 - 2014) Of Cambridge, passed away after a long illness, on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Nelda (Musselman) for 67 years. Loving father of Roger (Susan) Shantz, Linda (Elwin) Garland, and Stan (Kathy) Shantz. Grandfather to Barb, Brian, Nathan, Andrew, Rachel, Sarah, Kristi, and Kayleena. Great-grandfather to four great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters. Brother of Roy. Brother-in-law of Rae Hilborn, Mearl Steckly, and Arlene Burnett. Predeceased by his parents Benjamin B. and Myra (Snyder) Shantz, by brothers Clayton, Gordon and one brother in infancy; sisters Violet, Grace, Marjorie and Edna; five brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law. Ralph briefly owned a trucking business at Alma, farmed at Freeport and for many years at Blair, owned a Chore Boy Milking machine business while living in New Dundee and then retired to Cambridge, volunteering for many years with Choice Books, MCC. He was an active lifelong member of Hagey/ Preston Mennonite Church. For the past 19 years, he lived at Fairview Mennonite Home, first in one of the cottages and then in the long term care wing after his stroke in 2008. Ralph's family wishes to thank those many friends who visited him at Fairview and a very, very special thank you to those staff at Fairview who looked after Ralph with such professional care and compassion. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Ralph at Fairview Mennonite Home, 515 Langs Drive, Cambridge on Sunday, December 14 at 1 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 2: 30 p.m. Reception will immediately follow the service. Private family committal service at Hagey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are invited to Preston Mennonite Church, Mennonite Central Committee, or Fairview Mennonite Home.
