- HOWELL, JAMES HARRISON. A Galt physician for 47 years, his obituary appeared in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on December 23, 1967.
Dr. James Harrison Howell, after 47 years of medical practice in Galt, Ontario, died suddenly at his home on October 25. A son of the late Jr. and Mrs Howell of Welland, descendants of a United Empire Loyalist family, he was in his 76th. year.
Dr. Howell graduated in arts from the University of Toronto in 1913 and received his master's degree the following year. In 1915 he interrupted his medical course to go overseas with the No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station, returning to Toronto early in 1916 to complete an accelerated medical course. After graduation in 1917, he served in various units overseas until his return to Canada in 1919. In October 1920 Dr. Howell established a general practice in Galt.
He was a member of the Alpha Omega Honour Medical fraternity, the Canadian Medical Association and the Madawaska Club, and a former director of the Royal Canadian Military institute of Toronto. For some years he was medical officer of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, Galt.
Dr. Howell is survived by his widow, the former Lillie Isabel Murray of Kingston, three daughters •••• and a sister, Dr. Doris Howell, Galt. (Note - his sister is listed in Toronto).
