  • Notes
    • Mrs. Margaret Currie.

This venerable lady has lived in Winterbourne and its vicinity for thirty-six years. It was to her residence that the post-office was recently removed. Mrs. Currie and her husband lived on their farm near this village about twenty-five years, and previous to this about fifteen years in North Dumfries. She was born in Roxburyshire Scotland, in 1831, and Mr. Currie in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1829. He came to this country in 1839 and Mrs. Currie in 1847. They were joined in marriage by Rev. Dr. Bain, of Galt, in 1851.

The fruits of this union were six children, three of whom died and three are living. The latter are Robert, residing at Markham, William, at Mount Forest, and Mrs Janet Mitchell (widow) and her daughter, Miss Maggie C., living with the mother. Mrs. Mitchell recently received the appointment of postmistress of Winterbourne. Mr. and Mrs. Currie, like many others, have experienced the trials and tribulations of life as well as days of sunshine and happiness. The husband and father died about eleven years ago. Mrs. Currie now lives a retired life and is a typical Scotch lady of more than an ordinary intelligence. She scouts the opinion I advanced some weeks ago regarding the dark portions of soil on the William Scheifele farm, to the effect that it was caused by the Indians, who had evidently used coal for fuel. She bases her disbelief upon the fact that the Indian's characteristic aversion to hard labor prevented his searching and digging for the black diamonds I refer to this simply to draw some information from our local geologists as to the origination of these strange formations.

The removal of the post office seems to have created some contention and misunderstanding in the neighborhood; but as this is usually the result of such removals the case in question is looked upon with a sort of calm indifference by those of mature judgment and long experience in political jurisprudence, From the standpoint of one entirely disinterested, the official affairs at the present post office appear to be running smoothly, and there seems to be no occasion for serious complications or a rupture of friendly relations between the villagers. At best the emoluments of the office are small and not of a character to encourage a desire on the part of one otherwise engaged to become its incumbent. Women are found at the delivery windows of our leading post offices, and in most cases they are more expert and accommodating than men. In the heat of excitement, the result of the removal agitation, there may have been some undue contention, but afoer more mature reflection on the part of those who were opposed to the removal in the beginning it is sincerely hoped that they will relent and in future consider the event as one not to be taken seriously at heart in an enlightened Christian community where peace and harmony should prevail.
