Notes |
- J. R. HUGHES.
Citizens of the town of Waterloo are today mourning the loss of one of its most influential and highly esteemed citizens in the death of J. B.. Hughes which took place at his residence last Wednesday evening about six o'clock. While not in the best of health the past few months it is only within the last few weeks, that he was confined to his room, and, while the best of medical skill and attention were accured his advanced age told and he passed peacefully away. Few there were, if any in town who has not the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was well liked by all who knew him and his passing away will be learned with sincere regret by a large circle of friends not only here but throughout the States and Canada where he was well and favorably known .
The late Mr. Hughes was born on Sept 28th. 1836 in the village of Brownsville, King township York county. The name of the village has since been changed to Schoenborg He was a son of the Mr and Mrs. George Hughes direct descendants of William Hughes who accompanied William Penn with a number of other Quakers of Penn's second voyage to America. Mr. Hughes father was born in Hughesville, Pennsylvania in 1811 . He was a blacksmith and moved his family from Brownville to Hawkesville, Wellesley Township when the late Mr Hughes was 11 of years of age.
There was no school in Hawkesville in the days when the Hughes family moved there but through their efforts of the elder Hughes who donated an acre of land at the corner of his farm for the purpose school house which that Mr. Hughes completed his school days. The veteran insurance man started in life as a blacksmith learning the trade with his father. He continued at this until 27 years of age when he assumed charge of his father's farm for a period of four years.
Just fifty two years ago last January he left Hawkesville and came to Waterloo to begin in business career as an insurance man. He was appointed inspector of the Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and for nearly a score of years filled position a highly satisfactory manner. On resigning from the company he accepted a position as special agent in Canada for the Aetna Fire Insurance Co. of Hartford Conn, a position which he held at the time of his death. Mr. Hughes held the honor of being the oldest insurance adjuster, in point of service, in the Dominion.
In addition to his busy career as an adjuster, he always found time for interest in municipal affairs and philanthropic work. When the town of Waterloo was incorporated m 1876 be served as councilor for the West Ward being returned 77 and 78. In 1998 he was elected Mayor holding the chief magistrates office for one year and while he would have liked to have remained to serve the town, pressure of business intervened. He found time however to take an active part in the Board of Trade and for some time was President. In hospital work he took a keen interest and for 12 years was President of the Trust. At the time of his death he was still a member of the trust and held the proud distinction of being Hon. President.
In politics Mr. Hughes was staunch Liberal and for many years acted as President of the North Waterloo Reform Association. He was married, in 1845, to Laura J. Winn daughter of Josiah and Mary Winn of Wellesley township. Of this happy union three children were born, Dr. Fred G. Hughes. Mrs. (Dr.) W. Wells both Waterloo and Laura (deceased). To the sorrowing widow and children the deepest sympathy is extended in this their hour of sore bereavement.
