- First confirmed COVID-19 death in Waterloo Region
Waterloo's Jonathan Tsai, 41, worked in entertainment industry
WATERLOO REGION - A 41-year-old Waterloo man who died in hospital is the first confirmed death related to COVID-19 in Waterloo Region.
Jonathan Tsai died early Tuesday morning at St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener. He was admitted to hospital March 21, after initially coming down with coldlike symptoms around March 10 or 11.
Known to his friends and colleagues as John, Tsai was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago, but it didn't slow him down, his parents, Fern and Allan Tsai, said. "He was always very busy," his mother said.
John was living his dream, his parents said, as a well-known member of the entertainment industry in Waterloo. "This work was his dream," Fern said. "He's a people person. . . . He seemed to be on the go six and a half days a week."
Tsai grew up in Waterloo, a graduate of Waterloo Collegiate Institute and Conestoga College. He had worked in an office role at Waste Management for several years before chasing that dream to work in the entertainment field.
He was involved in the ownership and operation of a number of businesses, including Ace Ping Pong Lounge, District Nightclub, The Drink Uptown, and talent management and event firm Across the Board Entertainment, which he co-founded in 2004....
