- HUNTER JOSEPH NELSON
Hunter Joseph Nelson of Orangeville died at Dufferin Area Hospital after a lengthy illness on November 22 1970 at the age of 75.
He was born in Laurel Ontario to his parents George and Clara (Newstead) Nelson educated at Laurel Public School and a term at OAC just before World War I.
He was active in Sunday School and Young Peoples organizations in Laurel Methodist Church.
Mr Nelson was married 10 Maud Scarland June 29 1921 at Niagara-on-the-Lake.
He spent most of his life on the home farm at Laurel except for 5 years in which he spent managing a chain store in Detroit and Galt. He sold the farm in 1955 and returned to the farm at Laurel in 1930 and subsequently bought a grocery business in Dundalk. Mr. Nelson had been retired for 5 years following the sale of the store to Bob McCracken.
He was active in the Legion in Dundalk and had served on the School Board at Laurel for one term in the thirties.
He was overseas with the 164th Battn. spending one year in England and two in France with the Railway Troops.
Surviving'is his wife the former Maud Scarland his son Harold T. of Bramalea and daughter (Betty) Mrs Bruce Woodland of Mono Township.
Surviving brothers and sisters are George and Bertha of Toronto. He also leaves 8 grandchildren.
Deceased members of immediate family are Mary, Eleanor (Mrs Moore), Ruth (Mrs Bailey) and Tom.
The funeral was held on November 25 1970 at Turnery Funera Home with Rev Robt. Thompson officiating. Interment Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wm Banks and Donald Greason, Laurel; Robt McCracken and Wallace Bradley, Dundalk; John Youngs of Toronto and Preben Birk of Orangeville. The last two being nephews of the deceased.
Flowerbearers were Peter Birk and 7 grandchildren.
Organ music was provided by Mrs Maltby.
