- GoFundMe campaign launched to repatriate student killed in Wellesley crash
Kamini Gill was on her way to work when the tragic collision took place on Sept. 23.
Friends and family of Kamini Gill, one of three victims in the fatal collision near Kitchener on Monday, have launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for her body to be sent home.
By Friday, Sept. 27, the campaign had raised about $13,000 from more than 400 donors, with a target of $25,000.
"The amount raised will be used to send her body back home in India, Punjab," said Kamini's friend Aron Richard.
"Her family is grieving in isolation. They're devastated beyond words," Richard added.
Gill, 23, was an international student from Jalandhar, Punjab, pursuing a post-graduate diploma in project management at Conestoga College's Doon campus. She came to Canada in 2023.
"Her family's greatest wish is to bring their daughter home so that they can say their final goodbyes and lay her to rest in the land she called home," Richard said.
"However, the costs associated with repatriating her body from Canada to India are overwhelming, and her family is facing significant financial hardship."
The average price for shipping remains internationally is in the region of $15,000 to $20,000.
Gill was on her way to work, Richard said, when the crash happened on Monday around 9:40 a.m. at the intersection of Hessen Strasse and Greenwood Hill Road. It involved a Tesla and a Dodge Ram. Police reported three people lost their lives and three were injured.
The Tesla, driven by a 25-year-old-man from Cambridge, collided with the Dodge Ram driven by a 28-year-old man from Perth County. The Tesla driver, along with a passenger were pronounced dead at scene. Gill was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.
"We need support to raise the necessary funds to cover the costs of repatriation, funeral arrangements, and additional expenses that her grieving family will face," Richard said.
