- Teen killer heading home five years after Kitchener murder
KITCHENER A killer who was just 16 when he stabbed an older friend in the back 19 times is scheduled to return home to Kitchener to live with his mother in less than two weeks.
Now 21, he has almost served the two-year custodial portion of a seven-year sentence imposed in 2013 for the second-degree murder of Larry McDonald.
McDonald, 49, was killed in his apartment on Green Valley Drive in Kitchener after he tried to stop an argument between the troubled teenager and his mentally challenged, much older girlfriend.
Prosecutors sought to have the teen sentenced under tougher adult laws for "snapping" with a knife he carried on his belt after a night of heavy drinking and marijuana use in March 2010.
Justice Gary Hearn rejected that approach, however, and sentenced him as a youth after a hearing that included testimony from two psychiatrists.
The judge imposed another two years less a day in jail '97 on top of three years in custody since his arrest '97 plus five years of community supervision similar to probation.
With his jail time almost complete, the killer '97 whose identity is still protected by a court order '97 was back in Kitchener court Thursday to have the terms of his release set.....
