- Well-Known Farmer Meets Death
Lawrence Fried Pinned Under Tractor and is Drowned
Lawrence Fried was found dead beneath an overturned tractor in the ditch on the Blenheim-Wilmot townline about 2 miles south of New Dundee at two o'clock on Monday afternoon. Just how the accident occurred is not known. The accident occurred at a culvert in the road and it is believed in coming down hill he did not notice how close he was to the edge and the tractor overturned into the ditch pinning him underneath in about three feet of water. The doctors who examined the dead man said that he was uninjured but was in such a position that it was impossible for him to extricate himself, death being due to drowning.
Mr. Fried who lived about 1 ½ miles southeast of New Dundee, left his home about ten o'clock in the forenoon with his tractor to plough at another farm. Later passersby noticed the machine in the ditch by the roadside, but it was not until early in the afternoon, Mr. Fried not appearing, that is was thought he might be underneath and upon investigation the body was found submerged in three feet of water. No inquest was deemed necessary by Coroner Dr. Honsberger, of Kitchener, as it was evident the death was accidental.
The late Mr. Fried was a prominent farmer and a well-known horse and cattle breeder, showing at Toronto and London as well as at the fairs in this district. He was well known in New Hamburg. He was about 47 years of age and is survived by his widow and eight children, besides his father, John, Fried, now of Kitchener.

Lawrence (sic) Fried was found dead beneath an overturned tractor on the Blenheim-Wilmot road, about two o'clock this afternoon. He had been driving across the culbert (sic) when apparently the tractor left the road, broke through the railing and overturned in the ditch, where there was two or three feet of water. Fried was pinned underneath and was dead when found. Just when the accident occurred is not known definitely. He was taken to New Dundee and Coroner Dr. J. F. Honsberger called.
