- MARTIN MILNE TODD
1891-1963 Married: Minnie E. Clare
Martin Milne Todd was born in Galt on July 22, 1891, the son of Martin N. Todd and Joanna Gilholm. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Science degree and lived in Preston for about sixteen years before returning to Galt in 1936. Mr. Todd succeeded his father as president of the Grand River Railway in 1918 and later also served as the company's secretary-treasurer. The railway was an electric rail line which originated as the Galt, Preston and Hespeler Street Railway founded by Mr. Todd's grandfather Thomas Todd. Martin Milne Todd was the third generation of his family to serve as president of the railway, following his grandfather and his father in that position. Mr. Todd was associated with the Mutual Life Assurance Co. for thirty-five years heading the company's Galt agency from 1929 to 1963. He was also associated with the Gore Mutual Insurance Company for twenty-one years, serving on the company's board of directors from 1942 to 1963 and acting as the company's vice-president. He also served as president and director of the Galt Malleable Iron Co., as vice-president and secretary of Clare Bros. Ltd. of Preston and as vice-president of the Lake Erie and Northern Railway. Mr. Todd was a charter member and president of the Preston-Hespeler Rotary Club, a director of the South Waterloo Cancer Society and an active member of the board of the Freeport Sanatorium. He died on October 20, 1963 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.
