- MRS. O. JACKSON LAID TO REST
FUNERAL OF HIGHLY-RESPECTED ELMIRA CITIZEN HELD ON FRIDAY
On Friday afternoon the funeral took place of Mercy Jane Rodgers, beloved wife of John Oliver Jackson, whose death was briefly noted in last week's issue of the Signet.
The funeral service was held from the home on Church Street and was largely attended by relatives and friends from Elmira; Peel Township and elsewhere. The remains were laid to rest in Elmira Union Cemetery Rev. E. Lowe of Preston conducted the service and spoke of how great a loss it is to lose a mother and yet that loss is a mother's gain. This he declared should be a great comfort and also the hope that we shall meet again in a happier land. Mrs. Tyack and Mrs. Ziegler sang.
The pall bearers were Messrs. Jos. Johnston, John Small, August Voisin, Henry Hedrich, Edward Tyack and E. G. Winn. A beautiful wreath of roses was given by Mr. Jackson and Sons, and beautiful flowers were also sent by the garage boys, by the pupils and staff of Grimsby High School. The Ladies Aid of Gale Presbyterian Church and Miss a Zilliax.
The late Mrs. Jackson was born in the year 1866 in Peel Township, where she resided until about six years ago, when the family removed to Church Street West, Elmira. She had always been in good health until after the war broke out and three of her sons enlisted, when the consequent worry undermined her health. She had been seriously ill only about a week and the news of her death came as a distinct shock to her many friends and acquaintances.
She leaves to mourn her loss her beloved husband and four sons: - William and Earl of Elmira, Sanfield Principal of Grimsby High School and Angus of the Dominion Laboratory, St. Catharines. There are four grandchildren, one brother, Albert Rogers and five sisters, - Mrs. George Hergott, Elmira, Mrs. George Brooks, Salem, Mrs. George Bell, Listowel, Thomas Gilmore and Mrs. Thomas Brooks in the West. In the Book of Proverbs it says that the price of a virtuous woman is far above rubies. Mrs. Jackson has always been a devoted wife and a real mother. Her great love for her boys and her untiring devotion and care for them will never be forgotten. Her thoughts and deeds were always for others rather than for herself, and even in suffering her heart was brave, loving and fearless.
