- PROMINENT SHELBY BUSINESSMAN DIED:
Chris. A. Near, 51, proprietor of the Shelby Tractor Sales, and a life-long resident of Shelby Township, died at his home on Friday, Jan. 2, following an illness of several month's duration Mr. Near was 51 years of age and was the son of the late Bishop Eli B. near, pioneer Oceana resident, and Mrs. Cora B. Near who survives him. He had operated the Shelby Tractor & Sales for 16 years, and for a good portion of that period also operated the Near farm in East Shelby, which was sold a year ago to Allen Andrews. The Near family have been prominently identified with the community for over 80 years. His grandfather was one of the pioneer builders, and his father as a Bishop in the Reformed Mennonite Church, which was known in the denomination from Pennsylvania to California. Mr. Near was married on Jan. 29, 1922 at Mears to Miss Naomi Purdy and they made their home in Shelby Centre until 1946 when they moved to the present home in the village. Besides his wife and mother he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Hill, of Hart and one son, Burton Near, of Shelby, and six grandchildren. He had been a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church for 29 years. He was an energetic man with a pleasing personality and gained a wide acquaintance throughout the county. His numerous friends will regret his early passing and will miss his spirit of good fellowship. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Reformed Mennonite Church at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Henry Fischer of Lancaster, PA officiating. Interment was made in the Mennonite Cemetery near the church
