Notes |
- At age 20, Neil left home, moving into his own apartment and like many young Kitchener men of the era, he found love at a dance at the Victoria Lake Pavilion. Gladys Gehl was three years older than Neil and worked at the Smiles and Chuckles chocolate factory. She was ready to settle down and have children, but Neil at only 20 was less sure. Gladys won out and on Jan. 26, 1936 they married. .....Life was happy, at least until Neil received notice he'd been called up for a wartime job and was sent to a rubber factory in Sarnia which was a heck of a weekend commute in his Model T Ford. During the week, he had to stay in Sarnia, leaving Gladys with baby Joy. Neil hated the factory job but after five months, he was in for something much worse. Neil was drafted, sent off to basic training then overseas....Neil returned home in May 1946, back into the comfort of his family, trying to get to know his little daughters. While in the army, he had qualified as a driver mechanic, a trade he was able to continue in Kitchener, back in his old job. In a few years, Neil purchased the business from the retiring owner and changed its name to Petes Service, Peter being his middle name.
