Brilliant Medical Authority meets tragic death in Neebling River

In the death of Dr. Newton O. Thomas, who was drowned on Saturday night in the Neebling River, Fort William loses one its most brilliant citizens, and the Province of Ontario one of the best scientists in its bacteriological laboratories.

How Dr. Thomas happened to fall into the river is a mystery and the coroner, Dr. J.W. Cook, who made the investigation yesterday decided there was no necessity for an inquest and all circumstances pointed to accidental death.

Dr Thomas, who was 41 years old, was one of the brilliant students of Victoria university, having taken his B.A. degree there and graduated from University of Toronto two years later with a degree of MD specializing in bacteriology and pathology. The day after graduation he obtained a commission with the Canadian field ambulance and went overseas, attaining the rank of Captain. His special knowledge of bacteriology was made use of in the hospitals during the war and he served with the army of occupation in Germany after the armistice.

Returning to Canada in 1919, he was appointed head of the provincial laboratory, Fort William, as bacteriologist and and pathologist for the district of northwestern Ontario, by the provincial government. He has held that position ever since and his services to the profession here have been invaluable.
