Notes |
- MUTER, PETER JOHNSTON According to the 1871 census he was aged 37, his wife was Rosalind, they had six children and his birthplace was the Isle of Man. A question mark follows "the Isle of Man", and this is typical of most of the information we have about him.
He received the degree of M. D. from Victoria University, Toronto, in 1866, and was registered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in that year.
His card appeard in the Canadisch Volksblatt on January 31, 1867.
Dr. Muter, Physician, Surgeon and Accoucheur. Gives special attention to all diseases of the throat and lungs. Residence New Hamburg.
The only other direct reference to him in New Hamburg was in an announcement in the same paper on March 27, 1867.
The undersigned certifies that he treated Mr. John Ingold during the course of his recent illness, and states that the only illness which he had was brain fever, which appears to have prejudiced his reputation in an unfortunate manner.
P. J. Muter, M. D.
Licentiate, etc.
Moreover Mr. Ingold will call to account everyone who has spread false prejudicial lies about him.
Interesting though this may be, there. is no further mention of either the patient or his physician.
The directories of the period present conflicting listings, as follows: 1867 New Hamburg, 1870 - 1872 Shakespeare (and Crosshill), 1874 Linwood, 1878 Linwood ( & Wellesley). The Osier Library, McGill University, regarding his listing in Linwood in 1882 says:
For your information, Osier has crossed out this name in pencil and added 'away. beside it.
According to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, when he left Linwood he went to Thornhill, and he then seems to have dropped out of sight.
A blacklist in the Berliner Journal gives his name, owing $4. 00, in May 1879. This suggests that he had left the area by this time.
The University of Toronto Monthly, December 1901 re the class of '66 says P. J. Muter (O. B. ).
The confusion is compounded in that he appears to have been in practice earlier. He was appointed coroner for Perth County according to an announcement in the June 16, 1860 issue of the Canada Gazette. On September 7, 1865 the Volksblatt referred to Dr. Muter of Shakespeare. Presumably he practised without being registered by the College, but no evidence is at hand to establish where or when.
