The late Raymond Koenig was an avid astronomer, and spent three decades teaching physics and astronomy at Laurier

WATERLOO REGION - One of Wilfrid Laurier University's first science professors now has an asteroid named after him.

Raymond Koenig was an avid astronomer, and spent three decades teaching physics and astronomy at Laurier. He died in 2007 at the age of 76.

In November, the International Astronomical Union renamed an asteroid to honour Koenig, according to a news release from the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of which Koenig was a member.

The asteroid is now known as Asteroid raykoenig + 1989 UL1, and is located in the main Asteroid Belt between the planets Mars and Jupiter.

Koenig also founded the local chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society and served as president many times. Construction of the group's observatory near Ayr also occurred under his leadership.

Not only was Koenig an avid astronomer, he was also a keen astrophotographer. As far back as the early 1970s, long before personal computers and digital cameras, Koenig was known for taking celestial photographs on colour film.

He was hired by Waterloo Lutheran University in 1963 as an assistant professor of physics, and helped set up a new physics laboratory at the university now known as Laurier. He taught many science courses at Laurier, but was best known for teaching astronomy.

Koenig has two local awards named after him. Laurier created the Raymond Koenig Physics Award after his death, and the local astronomy club named its annual outstanding service award after Koenig.
