- Quantum pioneer Raymond Laflamme dies at 64
Architect of Waterloo's Institute for Quantum Computing leaves lasting legacy.
Raymond Laflamme, a pioneering figure in quantum information processing and the founding executive director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo, died on June 19 after a long battle with cancer. He was 64.
Laflamme earned his PhD under Stephen Hawking at Cambridge University before shifting his focus from cosmology to quantum computing at Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 2001, he returned to Canada, joining the University of Waterloo and the Perimeter Institute.
From 2002 to 2017, Laflamme led IQC, transforming it into a world-class research hub that positioned Canada at the forefront of the quantum revolution. His scientific work included developing innovative approaches to quantum information processing and quantum error correction, and he co-authored two textbooks on the subject.
A highly decorated scientist, Laflamme was an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and held the inaugural Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis "John von Neumann" Chair in Quantum Information. Beyond his research, Laflamme was known for his dedication to fostering community and his adventurous spirit, even initiating research into quantum technologies for cancer treatment after his own diagnosis.
