Notes |
- SELF, R. Kenneth
Peacefully at his home in Cambridge, in his 81st year, surrounded by family. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Connie and his children, Richard (Nancy), Roger, Heather Parent, Susan Benton, Peter (Paula) and Paul (Tara). Loving Grandpa to Taylor, Jennifer, Kathleen, Elizabeth and Jacqueline Self, Emily, Alexandra, Gabrielle and Stephen Parent, Brandon Huggins and Richard Benton. He was predeceased by his parents, A. Roger and Stella Self and a sister, Gene Keel. A lifetime committed to Education and Christian faith, Ken began his teaching career at Central Technical School in Toronto, moved to the Halton School Board in administration before accepting the position of Director of Education for the Perth County Board of Education in 1972. Ken retired as Director in 1981 and began a fruitful post-retirement that included traveling and 10 years as a tenor in the Liberation Choir, which traveled to the Netherlands on three occasions and performed often in Southern Ontario. He will be remembered for his stead-fast Christian faith and his unshakable belief in the inherent goodness in people. A man of quick wit and gentle humour, Ken often found himself drawn to leadership in both his career and church life. Ken was a member of the Cambridge Probus Club; he served as an Elder with Bonar Presbyterian Church in Toronto, Islington St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Toronto, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Stratford, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Hespeler and most recently, Central Presbyterian Church in Cambridge. A founding member of "St. Timothy's-on-the-Hill", as he often called his Friday morning coffee with a group of friends at Tim Horton's. We are certain he is now enjoying the same at "St. Peters-on High" with many old friends and family. Friends will be received at Coutts Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 96 St. Andrews St., Cambridge (519-621-1650) on Friday, from 7-9 p.m. A service of thanksgiving for the life of Richard Kenneth Self, will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, 7 Queen's Square Cambridge, ON. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment has taken place in Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge.
