  Millbank and the surrounding district are wrapped in sadness these days, for one of their outstanding citizens in the person of Mr. R. B. Hamilton answered the call to come up Higher, on Monday evening when he was quietly reading in his home, after being in his store during the day and at his beloved church on Sunday, where he taught his Bible class as usual. Mr. Hamilton was a man greatly beloved by all who knew him, one who followed in his Master's footsteps; and many a kindly deed and noble act he has done, that the world knows not of. Born at Atwood, in August, seventy-three years ago, he was the son of the late Robert Hamilton, formerly of Winterbourne, and the late Ellen Robb, of Scotland. His father died when he was quite a young lad and he early assumed the responsibilities of a fatherless home. He was the mainstay of his mother and guide and counsellor of his sisters, two of whom have been living with him in Millbank, and to them the word "brother" meant much. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to them, Mrs. McBain, Mrs. W. Blair and Mrs. G. Coghlin, of Millbank, Mrs. Pope and Mrs. Coghlin, of Atwood. One brother Will Hamilton, of Monkton, died six years ago and another brother, Jas. Hamilton, of Trowbridge, some years previous. Mr. Hamilton left the farm early in life and attended Business College in Guelph and later entered the store of Mr. John Schnurr in Linwood proving a valued assistant, and also worked as an undertaker. Here, and elsewhere, he gave of his time and talents in the Master's service. Almost thirty years ago he came to Millbank and started a store and also an undertaking parlor. Here again his sterling qualities won him success. But along with his active duties, he was a familiar figure in the former Methodist Church, having delivered his first sermon as a local preacher, forty-nine years ago; [words missing]… the folks who look back with joy on his ministry. He acted as treasurer in the Millbank Wesley church for years and [?] & M. treasurer in the United Church until recently. He was an elder in the United Church since union, a wonderful Bible class teacher, and an honored and active member of the Young People's Union. The latter had the privilege of doing him honor last December on the occasion of his Diamond Jubilee in young people's work. He was instrumental in organizing young people's work in the counties of Perth and Waterloo and many a lonely trip he made over poor roads in this cause. But "ever onward" was his motto and many folk throughout these counties could rise up and call him blessed for the joy and fellowship the Epworth League and Christian Endeavour Societies have brought to their lives. He was always a strong advocate of temperance, both by precept and example and acted as treasurer of the Perth Temperance Federation for many years. He was ever ready with his financial support of the Church, the Bible Society, the Library and every other worthy cause. In the realm of sport, he was an ardent enthusiast, and always stood for fair play and good sportsmanship. He was in very truth, a noble Christian gentleman. Well might it be said of him "a prince has fallen in Israel." Sleep on, dear friend, such lives as thine Have not been lived in vain, But hold an influence rare, divine, On lives that here remain. The funeral service will be held at his late residence in Millbank on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock and a later service in Atwood United Church, from where interment will take place in Elma Centre Cemetery.
